my 16 year old started college in september was fine at first but rhe last few weeks has been extremely tired , lost weight not sure if its related or not but it has been a quick loss - she went fr size 14 trousers to size 10 in around 4-6 weeks. She has been just lying down when she gets home , too tired to go to clubs she normally goes to. She struggled to walk around shops even and that was on a saturday so no college. She sleeps well.

i took her to the gp a few days ago
and he made me feel like i was over reacting and kept asking her things like “do you have an eating disorder” . She has had a folic acid deficiency in the past and i really had to push for just a test for that an anemia. she has the blood test next week. She recently had a 5 day heart monitor on after fainting iver a year ago ( it took that long to get it) but tbh she has no symptoms of anything like that.

She is only at college three days a week today is her second day this week and she looks awful. Shes just lying on her bed and has been since 5 when she got home. She was not feeling strong enough to go to an group she normally loves tonight.

I am really concerned about her and ive told her i think she should really take tomorrow off (shes not in friday anyway) and rest. She has the blood test next wednesday.

am i just over reacting here to normal teenage things because the gp made me feel like a crazy old woman!

I don't say this to scare you, but I lost my sister to meningitis when she was sixteen as the GP dismissed my mother's concerns twice. Ok, this was back in the 70s, but you must insist that all tests are carried out urgently. Either via GP or A&E.

Nobodytellsmenothin · 12/11/2025 22:13

My husband had this when we were first dating, I had no idea (put it down to man flu and laziness- I didn’t know how he dealt with being ill and thought he was just a wimp) and he went into diabetic ketoacidocis. A incredibly lucky set of circumstances meant my uncle (ex PC and wife has type 1 diabetes) popped over and between him and my auntie they saved his life. The hospital staff said he was hours away from going into a coma and his blood sugar levels and ketones were absolutely sky high. Now diagnosed type 1 diabetic. PLEASE continue to push, something isn’t right for her to be that tired, please go see another doctor tomorrow and do not let her go to college.

Ocelotfeet27 · 12/11/2025 22:15

Good plan OP, get her seen ASAP and get bloods done. Hope it turns out to be something easily treated.

Also, and a slight aside, who TF bluntly asks a teenage girl 'so, do you have an eating disorder'? The absolute butchering of any understanding about the delicate knife edge that is psychological distress my god.

This 100%. Unbelievably crass thing for the GP to ask.

MrsCillian · 12/11/2025 22:21

I had those symptoms at her age and it was glandular fever. I was so unwell but made a full recovery within a couple of months.

I hope your daughter gets whatever treatment she needs and is better soon x

Bunnybear42 · 12/11/2025 22:24

echo pp. firstly for type 1 diabetes my stbexH was Misdiagnosed twice at 19 yrs old as didn’t wee all the time - only when he collapsed in the road on way to work with ketoacidosis was he finally treated and he was really ill by then!
also I had glandular fever and lost a lot of weight and was so tired I couldn’t barely move from my bed for the first 2 weeks (as a teenager ) it was awful but I do remember having very swollen glands in neck, arms and behind knees and could barely eat as throat was so sore.
no one can diagnose this on Mumsnet of course but we all agree with you that it warrants an urgent check and blood test. I would absolutely keep her off college tomorrow and use the day to take her to A&E. Tests can be done there and then . Hope she is feeling better soon

Pinkflower100 · 12/11/2025 22:25

My child has type 1 diabetes and it was my first thought too. The weight loss and tiredness are two of the four main symptoms.

You don't sound like a crazy old woman at all!

It sounds really worrying. I think getting her to rest is just being responsible. Health first, education second.

I hope your DD is okay. As you’ve said you have 5 children so you know this isn’t right. I hope it’s not something too serious. X

happydays312 · 12/11/2025 22:37

I'm really worried for you and your daughter - please ignore pp that suggested you shouldn't have gone in with her - ridiculous! I have 2 daughter aged 17 and 22 and the oldest asked me to go with her less than a year ago as she wanted support - of course I went!! I wonder if your mum could do a simple finger prick test tonight if she is local? That would give you the answer very quickly about type 1. I will echo what others have said - I was lucky to be alive when I was diagnosed - get it checked ASAP. You could ring 111 and they might triage you as needing to be seen tonight. Good luck x

applecrumblespider · 12/11/2025 22:38

Could be coeliac would explain all those symptoms, although the weight loss is very fast. Ask for the coeliac blood test at the same time as investigating the other possibilities.

3luckystars · 12/11/2025 22:41

Your GP sounds absolutely useless.

Cakeandcardio · 12/11/2025 22:43

Redburnett · 12/11/2025 20:59

She should have seen the GP on her own, unless she specifically wanted you to go in with her. It sounds as though your presence distracted from the GP's focus on your DD.

Oh absolutely behave. Not everyone is a loner who does everything alone.

Hope you get answers OP. A and E seems your best bet

miuri · 12/11/2025 22:49

this sounds like type 1. Don’t wait until tomorrow. Go to hospital tonight.

Joeydoesntsharefood25 · 12/11/2025 22:50

Please get her checked for type 1 diabetes and coeliacs disease.

Ok we have actually just done a finger prick test - my mum died when i was a child her diabetes was very hard to control and eventually complications led to heart failure.

But as a weird coincidence my sons girlfriend is also type 1 and just tested my daughter.

she had eaten a sandwich abour 3 hours ago and her bloos sugar was 10.7.

sones girlfriend said its a little higher than you would expect but not massively high so shes going to do another finger prick test in the morning to see whats what.

im not sure if thats the correct advice! But my daughter seemed ok with that plan.

Get diabetes ruled out asap. But beyond that absolutely this is what private health insurance is for! Ask the private GP for a referral to a paediatrician. You should be able to get an appointment within a few days. Once you have the referral call round local private paediatricians to see who can fit you in first, then ask your insurer for authorisation for that consultant (don't let them tell you who to see or you might wait longer, also this way you can check their reviews).

You'll get at least half an hour of undivided attention from a consultant who will then run a wide range of bloods and have a followup with you quickly thereafter. If she needs referring on to a specialist that will happen extremely quickly too.

The difference between NHS and private care for such things is night and day. You will not believe the level of speed and care.

WeightLossGoal2024 · 12/11/2025 22:57

10.7 3 hours after eating is high. Bf's gf may have different thresholds for what she considers high. But to me i'd be in GP or A&E first thing. I'd bet type 1.

sleepylittlebunnies · 12/11/2025 22:58

Her blood sugar should not be 10.7 as a non diabetic. That’s quite high for a lot of diabetics 3 hours after eating. I would take her to A&E tonight.

aufolandedonmyface · 12/11/2025 21:11

Ok probably a really stupid question but my dh has private health insurace through his worm - the whole family is covered . We have never used it. Would this be the kind of thing it could help with - i mean will it be any speedier that waiting for blood tests etc?

Obviously depends on the provider - but with our workplace private GP service you'd be able to get an appt tomorrow, get the bloods done, and have them back the day after - and that's for non urgent things. Might be quicker for urgent.

she did say that she has to worry when its over 15 but tbh i may have totally misunderstood as my mind was panicking already !

Good that you've got an appointment tomorrow. My first thought was either diabetes or hyperthyroidism. Oh, just saw your update re 10.7; that seems high.

Littlemissbubbblles · 12/11/2025 23:01

10.7 three hours after eating is too high. You need to be seen
