Am I the only one who finds it incredibly fake? I mean, all social media is to an extent, obviously, but I cringe every time I’m on it, which it probably 4 times a year when I get particularly fed up of my job and have a browse on the jobs part. I’m considering coming off it but have found the job search part helpful in the past.
The long posts about people’s recent recruitment successes, the call outs of work, the singing from the rooftops about achievements and wins, I mean, surely no one outside their company gives a crap and I’m going to guess the person themself probably doesn’t really care. The saddest stuff to me is the number of people posting about the death of relatives etc, and the tenuous links to their workplace. One of my “contacts” posted about the death of their child two weeks ago, with details about the death and a shout out that they still care about work and will be back in time (cue next post a week later saying their back at work and hoping people still see them as good at their job). It felt massively oversharing and again, like their using that as a way of garnering work which seems strange to me. Surely they can just let people know who they’re currently working with and mention it if necessary when they next speak to people. Not to mention the amount of charity boasting that takes place.
Is it just a form of self-marketing (as I think) or are these genuine posts from people who are just really into their careers? I’m a mid-senior manager and, whilst I like my job day to day, I really don’t relate to how these people talk about work. I also just find it very… American maybe?
What do you think? Is it genuine or just a sales pitch in attempts to further careers and earning potential?
