Cakes - can you stack an 8 inch circle cake on top of an 8 inch square cake?

I want to stack an 8 inch circle cake on top of an 8 inch square cake to make a two-tiered cake, and then decorate it (using dowels/supports, of course). Just wondering if there are any reasons why this won't work...

Not that I can think of. Just curious why

It's going to be a Paw Patrol tower themed birthday cake for a 4yo. Needs height, so I don't have to do too much fancy fondant/modelling work!

I can't see why you couldn't. But alternatively you could buy a second round tin, or bake two cakes one after the other?

When you say work……

With good enough balance you can stack anything.

You will have overhang though.

WiltedLettuce · 11/11/2025 08:26

Would there be overhang though? If you have an 8 inch diameter circle on top of an 8x8 square?

Won’t 8 in inches be the maximum across the circle so it’s inside the square as the diagonal as of the square are greater than 8 inches

so it will touch tye edges at the midpoints of the four straight edges ?

No, it should be an exact fit.
if the two shapes had the same surface area there would be an overhang but in this case the circle is a smaller area.

You’re right. I was upside down.

Can always check with the tins before you bake.

The worse that could happen is having to slightly trim to round cake.. Which will then be covered with icing. I've done it before, it was fine. Didn't need any supports if uts just sponge cake.

WiltedLettuce · 11/11/2025 19:34

Thank you - I couldn't work out whether I was overthinking this. I want the square one on the bottom for the base, then the round one on top, then going to do some rice crispie modelling on top.

I've done you a diagram. Admittedly a shit diagram but still a diagram.
