How can I make £6k in the next 12-18m?

I need an operation which is around £12k-13k.
I need to save up half and the hospital will let me finance the rest on a 0% finance scheme.

Ideally id like to have the op in 12m time.

I need some ideas on how to make £6k. I have been applying to Xmas temp jobs but had no luck. Probs as I already work ft during the week and they want availablity all week.

Ive applied to local supermarkets, high street shops and no luck. I'm middle aged and they are probably looking for young, cheaper ppl.

Any ideas on where I can look for a weekend job or even the off evening shift.

Save like mad, don’t do holidays, eating out etc
mortgage payment holiday or switch to interest only
pubs for evening shifts
delivery driver
take in ironing ;)

Have you tried local bars and restaurants, do you have anything you can sell?

Thistooshallpsss · 10/11/2025 16:57

Weekend care work?

PermanentTemporary · 10/11/2025 16:57

£500 a month is a lot.

Could you offer any kind of tutoring? Online language sessions - I am looking for someone to chat in Italian with for example.

How urgently do you need the surgery? Could you wait a year?

parietal · 10/11/2025 17:00

What skills and qualifications do you have? You need to maximise your income per hour of work to seriously save up.

Babysitting. Loads of people are happy hire a mature person to babysit on a Friday/saturday. Round my way you could get £10 an hour at least.

I have speculatively contacted a few and they don't have anything but have asked for my CV in case something comes up.

I've needed the surgery really since 2020. Each year I'm feeling a little worse. Even if I don't save half in a year, and I have a few thousand, that is better than nothing.

Id love to do this but realistically, I don't think ppl would leave their kids with a random stranger!

Do you drive? I have a few friends who work for Amazon or other delivery companies one day on the weekend when they're saving up for something big. It's always a bit surprising when they turn up at my door with a parcel!

Aluna · 10/11/2025 17:12

Uber/mini cab driving?

You can offer references and an interview. Offer some free hours with parents there. Lots of families have no back up (family) so you may be very very surprised. If there are families on your street jus let them know you are available

A bit concerned about care work if you need surgery - it can be pretty physical. Try companion care work? But there is such a high need you should be able to find something.

They absolutely would - I’ve had to as single parent with no other options. Sign up to Bubble or similar. Get any qualifications/checks you can like first aid training. People like me will book you for a half hour initially to meet and check the fit, and then book you. Bring something like a fun board game or cookie ingredients and the kids will love you. Get a few good reviews from parents and you’re up and running. If you get on with the kids, parents will repeat hire.

Maybe get a DBS check done, then you can offer your services for babysitting and/or (if you like animals) pet sitting (probably not a high need animal like a dog if you work full time, but feeding cats/hamsters/guinea pigs/ goldfish plus plant watering)/ house sitting.

Are you in the UK and the NHS waiting list is too long? If so, can you initiate a Right To Choose request through your GP to speed things up?

houseofisms · 10/11/2025 18:06

If I need to make some quick money I flip furniture. Buy bits for cheap (usually because it’s poor photos) then dress it and sell for more. Currently old pine boookcases are popular, I buy for £10 and sell for £50/£60. If you can offer delivery they sell quick

Are you on an NHS waiting list for your surgery? Or are you not in the UK?
