Why is everything an app these days?

Probably making myself look ancient and out of touch...

But practically every website has an app version now, and usually a little box or message pops up encouraging me to download the app.

I don't get why a website can't just be a website, why does it have to be an app?

I do use apps for banking and Nectar but I think if I downloaded the app for every website I visited I would quickly run out of space on my phone. And isn't it easier to access everything from one web browser instead of having to keep opening different apps?

Does anyone use apps for everything? Is it better than using websites?

I just find the idea of all websites being apps instead weird.

But maybe I'm the weird one...

I loathe being forced to 'download the app' to do anything. Some are necessary but by and large it's just a harvesting exercise. I'm going through my phone deleting stuff and will redownload if I need to.

I love an app, they are often coded in ways to make processes much quicker and can interact with each other where needed (my calorie tracking app can draw the steps I've taken from my fitness app to factor it into my diary) I can use biometrics for logins which is far quicker than remembering log in details for multiple online banking platforms.

I do loathe websites that's automatically redirect you to their app if you open the website and have the app installed.

MN is actually a perfect example. You can't see DMs on the android app, but every time I open the website, and click on private messages, it automatically opens the app, to then tell me that page isn't available. Which I knew. Hence going to the website 🤷🏼‍♀️

Some people don't have a laptop of PC. Just a mobile. In some cases a tablet.

Nail on the head. I think more and more people are moving over to phones and tablets and not using laptops anymore. It's expensive for firms to have BOTH a website AND an app, so there's a push to get people to use apps, so in the long term, firms can stop the website. It's a numbers game. When the majority of users use the app, then the firm will be able to scrap the website.

Apps are quicker, easier to use and make it much easier to track things as well.

@SerendipityJane
Sorry I quoted you in error. I can't edit the quote out. My apologies.

I don't use banking apps.

I've got accounts at multiple banks - not with a tremendous amount of money in them I hasten to add - and I don't want to download an app for each bank. Especially when I'm mainly only accessing accounts once a month.

What annoys me is the number of banking services which aren't accessible in online banking and are only available via the banking app. So on occasion I've reluctantly downloaded the app, done what I need to do , and then deleted the app again. I feel as though I'm being pressurised into using the app.

I refuse to download banking apps as I don't want them.on my phone if it was stolen, so its good old fashioned website for me, which is an improvement on 5 years ago when I mainly banked by phone.

The notifications 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️ then trying to work out where they’re coming from. My watch vibrates more than a rampant rabbit!

Same here.

I find apps incredibly annoying for the most part, and also because I'm old with an old phone quite often it tells me that 'your phone does not support this' or something similar.

Could not download NHS app during Covid. Cannot download Lidl app now. I don't bother for the most part. Also, like a pp said, I can't read/see a lot of info on a mobile. I prefer to use laptop for most things.
