How many times have you retrained and what were the industries?

I have yet to find employment that fulfils me enough not to want to walk in to the sea every morning. Unfortunately, I also don’t live near the sea, so that’s a bummer.

Im early 40s and have retrained 3 times, as in sitting exams and gaining qualifications along side starting from the bottom, and I’m getting the itch to do it again!

I’ve worked in the beauty industry, then HR and now finance and I still feel stagnant. I’m not even earning decent money in finance, which would make it more bearable!

I feel like my next ridiculous move should at least allow me to work up to mega money, even if the job is not totally to my liking, so any advice throughly welcomed.

Please tell me I’m not alone in the constant moving around trying to find something I like and/or am good at.

I’d suggest something in AI if you want to properly retrain?

Though you might find just swapping industries does wonders. I started in logistics, took an HR job within logistics, and hated it. Then I moved to HR within tech (a big company) and almost tripled my salary and found it marginally more bearable. Then I took an HR/Ops job in financial tech, salary doubled again, and I genuinely love the job.

Too many times

-Commercial model
-Healthcare professional (degree)
-Left the nhs to do teaching- did PGCE
-Left teaching and went back to the NHS!
-Then ventured into my own business (in a healthcare related field) which suits me better. I discovered that I prefer to be my own boss and in control of my hours, days etc

I don’t see myself changing drastically again, but I’d like to tweak things so I’m less “on the tools”

@24252627a I don’t know why but I’m drawn to healthcare. But without a nursing degree, I’m not sure there’s anywhere I could go, to earn decent money in the future.

What does your business provide, if you don’t mind me asking?

Honestly I’m terrible with technology. I don’t understand it and it bores the life out of me.

That’s bloody brilliant about your career path though. I wish I’d have stayed in HR but I was made redundant from my first role, then Covid etc. I fell in to financial services and qualified in my field. Also, very boring

I’ve retrained once - going from a serious City profession to a creative profession.

Btw - you do know there is a dedicated Mature Study and Retraining board, here:

https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/mature_students

It’s a bit quiet over there, I was hoping for a bit of traffic

I went from HR to education but wish I'd stayed in HR too! I think it would be easier to have worked my way up to earning more.

I would love to retrain again but can't afford being on an entry level salary again..

Nursing in early 80s; Occupational therapy assistant in 90s; teacher since 2000.

Are you ND OP? I only ask because my SIL is and has retrained several times. She always seems unsettled and also moves from work place to work place- sometimes within months.
She worked in the beauty industry, then did a nursing degree, then a masseuse and now training in horticulture.

Other than short courses, I've never re-trained after my initial degree. I have moved into quite different areas of my degree though having spent about 8yrs in each area and never considering I'd do anything else.

If you are interested in healthcare roles, there are 100's which aren't just nursing. The NHS also has lots of apprenticeships- from school leavers to those with far more experience. Surprisingly, alot of roles aren't patient facing either.

If you give us an idea of your skills and what interests you, we might have suggestions for you to look into.

NHS apprenticeships | Health Careers

Types of apprenticeshipsWith more than 350 different NHS careers, there are hundreds of different jobs which can be done through an apprenticeship. Here are just a few:

Only once. I have a PhD and worked in research and teaching for 20 years. Currently retraining as a clinical hypnotherapist. I’m 45.

I think the key is finding something that feeds your soul. Money wouldn’t be enough for me. Working in HR, for example, would make me want to throw myself in front of a bus every morning. What excites you and can you make money from it?

Definitely ND although I don’t have a diagnosis. I was looking at horticulture last week too 😂😂

thats what I’m craving I think, something that feeds my soul.

i have an interest in healthcare, it seams to hold my attention and I enjoy learning about different illnesses and treatments. That sounds really morbid but it’s true!

It’s not just nursing, there are radiography, occupational therapy, physiotherapy apprenticeships. You get paid on the job 😃

WaneyEdge · 14/11/2025 06:40

Following with interest as I’m very interested in retraining/going SE but have no idea what I could do!

AstaEscapes · 14/11/2025 06:44

@WaneyEdge - do take a look at the MN Mature Study and Retraining board I’ve linked above. It’s entirely dedicated to exactly what you want.

vinylvibes · 14/11/2025 07:16

I've gone from;

  • Administration
  • Nursery Practitioner
  • Learning Support
  • Now working in an office in FE

Currently studying a degree with The OU and interested in working within the charity sector.

That would be ideal but in my two local trusts, there haven’t been any apprenticeship programs for years

If you like healthcare, another idea if osteopath.
I used to attend a clinic which was attached to an osteopathy school in London. Majority of the students had already had a career elsewhere and were re-training. I had a an ex policeman, fitness instructor and IT person treat me at various times.

The course is full or part time. Once qualified, you could rent rooms and set your own hours. A friend did it and also added on an animal module. She did special sessions at stables doing horse and rider osteopathy, often along with dogs and cats.

kerstina · 14/11/2025 17:59

You are not alone in moving around. I was a dental nurse on leaving school then retrained to be a nursery nurse then left to care for my Mum who had dementia. I am just a housewife now part of me would love to work with children again but don’t fancy being coughed and sneezed on anymore . I wouldn’t mind being a counsellor but don’t want to go to an actual college as I am a hermit these days ! Hard to think of what to do with the rest of my life
