I haven’t slept in 3 nights now so I may be delirious. But my child (7M) has been in a ward since Friday of a London hospital’s in patient paediatrics department. He has been put in a ward with teenagers who are up until 3am / 4am everyday playing their mobile phones loud. I would say they are 16+
the ward next door is empty. Not a soul in sight. Tonight I lost the plot and asked the nurse what is the thought process behind their set up and she just told me that she can’t move us. I get it. But what is the thought process behind this.

Can't believe people are making excuses for such appallingly selfish behaviour!

'Oh but he's ill too' - well then it would be a good idea if he got some flipping sleep, wouldn't it.

Same - it smacks of "I'm all right, Jack", which seems to have become a bit of a pervasive attitude these last few years, particularly since the pandemic.

OP, it absolutely baffles me how hospitals don't prioritise sleep. Of course patients and guests can wear headphones and keep conversations down at night. I was stuck in for a week with high blood pressure after my first baby, until they sensibly concluded it wasn't going to get any better on an 8 bed ward with mums and babies being checked at every hour of the day and night, loud visitors, phones etc. and sent me home to be monitored there. And I appreciate that's just a snapshot relative to people who have to be in for the longer term. I'm so sorry your DS isn't well - I hope the transfusion goes well today and that he recovers soon.

He child is ill too ,
Its a difficult time when you have an ill child in hospital however old they are

So, that means they can't wear headphones 🙄

Where did i say that 🤔
Some people won't,
I was pointing out that all the children are ill its a hospital.

There's likely to be a lot more to it.
If a patient is being allowed things that aren't normally considered okay the most likely reason is that they're facing some very serious eg palliative care , just received devastating diagnosis, facing a major operation etc.
It might be the last chance that child has to laugh over a film with their family.

Before we lost my brother as a teenager we had a lovely pizza & movie night on the ward. It was a precious memory for us & especially for my mum. - it was prob annoying for the other patients & parents but they got to take their child home & will be a distant memory for them now.

If your child genuinely has not had any sleep at all then speak to their doctor and see if they can be given a mild sedative.

I think the doctor doing the rounds said they might consider him for an op that’s why they are leaving him overnight.

Each ward should supply free earplugs. Put out a bowl of them where people can help themselves.

Even when patients are quiet, the nurses can be very disruptive and behave as though they don't care if you sleep or not.

Wasitalwaysgoingtobelikethis · 10/11/2025 11:12

I admit I was being a bit stupid here. I need to go and get some earplugs. Although I am anxious about missing something and sleeping through the night just in case my son needs me. I am so exhausted at this point I think I would sleep through anything. I will however put earplugs in my son tonight I think.
