Selling car - not part exchange?

Hi
Has anyone sold their car recently and not part exchanged it with a garage?
The garage offered me 4500.
I went online with the Motorway 'sell my car' thing and have been offered 5777 and they'll collect it.
I've just looked on auto trader and garages are selling cars similar to mine for between 7000 and 7995.
There's only one private seller on there at 7000.

Does anyone sell private anymore? Anyone used Motorway or Car Wow or Sell my Car or similar?
I don't want to be stuck with it but - I don't know what to do!

I used motorway it was all good.
Price went down a bit when I added the mot minors. Then up a bit when someone bid more.

Guy who collected did knock a bit off as I didn't declare some damage. He was fair though, I missed it.

My DIL sold her car via Motorway and got £500 more than the dealer offered as a trade in. The whole process was hassle free. The only disadvantage is if you’re relying on the sale of your current car to fund the new one.

Hi, thanks.
Yes - dealer offered 4500. Motorway offering 5777.
But same cars selling on Auto trader at 7000+.

I don't need it to fund the sale immediately but do want to put it back in my ISA!

Yes, used both Motorway and We buy any car. And had brilliant experience with both, and got good prices. Tried WBAC for a different car and they did want to knock off too much for some paint damage that I genuinely hadn’t noticed, so didn’t go ahead with that one - fixed the damage and then sold through Motorway at a higher price. All good. All the people I dealt with were polite and friendly, no one was trying do me over. Would definitely give a go again. You don’t have to accept the final offer if you feel you can do better elsewhere.

Brummumm · 09/11/2025 10:39

So if Motorway said Guide price 6310 and best offer was 5777, do I take it? Or will Motorway relist again if I ask?

I used Motorway. I got more for it than I expected, but the experience was quite unpleasant. The buyer sent a thind party to collect. They took photos of any damage and then called the buyer. I had been meticulous with the photos I put on Motorway, using coins for scale etc. He first claimed I hadn't put up photos of the damage, which was clearly bullshit. He then said the photos they'd taken looked worse than the ones I had put up (so had miraculously found my photos). We did come to an agreement, but I actually think I'd stand my ground fully if that happened again as he was out of pocket for getting someone over to me to collect.

Motorway claims it's hassle free, but, ultimately, you are dealing with a used car salesperson and the industry has a well deserved reputation for being dodgy (sorry to the good ones out there).

I would sell to motorway/wbac.

Strangers coming round wanting to test drive/endless messages on Facebook/worry about fake cash/fake backs etc.

Of course a forecourt price is more- why would someone buy privately with absolutely no comeback for the same amount they can buy from a forecourt, with a six month warranty (check out the consumer rights rules)

Plus on a forecourt they can use credit.

Part ex is often not good because lots of garages just put it through the auction, so likely to end up taking similar/less than they bought it for, or they then sell it but have to cover a six month warranty.

EssentialGarage · 09/11/2025 10:49

Benefit of wbac is that there are places you can drive to- so you are not sat at home waiting for a dealer to come to your house.

I agree with @Sausagescanfly if you take good honest photos don't be afraid to refuse to sell.

Previous message fake Bacs autocorrect fail.

The trouble with looking at dealer forecourt or private sale prices is that you are seeing the top selling prices for which you have to accept the car may be sitting around for days/weeks/months and in the case of a dealer, they are also having to factor in overheads such as staffing, warranty and of course, profit.

If you are willing to advertise, accept that it may be sitting on your driveway for a while and then accept viewers, tyre kickers, chancers etc you could end up with something closer to your higher figure.
If on the other hand you just want it gone and a simple, safe sale then trade-in or a car buying company is the way to go.

Do you have a new car coming and need the old one gone by a specific date?

My OH sold one of his cars via FB a little while back.
Not a cheap car, it was a specialist model which finally sold for about £20k.
It was not an easy process as 95% of the contacts were obviously false and/or dodgy but there were some genuine ones amongst them and after he filtered those out, a successful sale was made.

Brummumm · 09/11/2025 10:57

@Nourishinghandcream I think this is where I'm at.
I just wondered whether if Motorway said 6310 and I had two offers at 5777 and 5775 when the auction ended (is it like eBay and people creep up with price, or bid nap at the end?) it was worth / possible to say to Motorway "pls run it again" - or do I just take the £550 ish less? I did list EVERY SINGLE piece of dirt / scuff separately 😂

We've used We Buy Any Car dot Com and been very satisfied. They will drop the offer if you ask for time to think! As PP said, there's no messing about. We were very honest about the state of the car and they didn't reduce the offer when they saw it. The money went straight into our bank account before we left the premises, although we paid for that service.

Dealer asking prices are not necessarily what people will actually pay, even for a car in showroom condition with warranty, etc

Doris86 · 09/11/2025 21:38

The number of people selling their cars privately has massively reduced in recent years. Partly due to leasing / PCP so people
dont have cars to sell anymore. Partly due to the growth of WBAC and similar companies, people take the easy option of selling to them.

However selling privately is the way to achieve the best price. That’s the way I always sell cars. I’d estimate I’m probably about £20k better off over the last 10 years by selling my cars privately rather than to WBAC.

pandagirl93 · 10/11/2025 07:12

We sell privately unless we’re desperate to sell quickly, we’re a lot better off for it. Just depends on how much patience you have for all the questions and potential waiting on a sale!
