Vinted sellers - what’s the catch?

Stupid question….

I sometimes see Vinted sellers who are selling items for way below the rrp and have loads in stock. They have good reviews etc.

The example today is Dr Martens. Are they seconds? Wholesale? Are they even genuine boots?

Like I say, this might be a stupid question but interested to know.

I have my own theory on this. I think that some people are just shopaholics, get bought them as presents, or just dippy. I know people like this. They buy loads of clothes, then don’t return them within the return time.

So, they end up selling it on Vinted. I think this is some of the cases. I once bought a brand new UGG item and she’d been bought it as a Christmas present and didn’t want it.

Also, in the past I’ve bought brand new items which a woman was selling. She was a buyer and had been given them but didn’t want them. That wasn’t in the uk so not sure if that’s illegal here.

Many times they will be fakes.

DisappointedD · 09/11/2025 08:15

The ones that have many of the items tend to be fake.

or come off the back of a lorry…

Vinted is crazy, I tried to list a cosmetic bag for sale, the sort you get free when you buy expensive branded beauty products, and when I named the brand it demanded all sorts of proof of brand - for a £2 bag. I gave up.

Branster · 09/11/2025 08:22

I think they are fakes or stolen goods.
Possibly with makeup/cosmetics they work for the brand or in PR and get lots if freebies.
I'm usually suspicious though and don't buy from such sellers.

I wondered about this too. I spotted a buyer that was selling a sealed Tonie for almost 1/2 price of shop bought. I noticed as soon as it sold another exact model was uploaded. I saw it happen at least 7 times. Then strangely several other new sellers also listed the same sealed character repeatedly. I gave those sellers a swerve

Mrgrinlingscat · 09/11/2025 08:35

Ooops I mean spotted a seller!

Could be outlet resales. I bought some shoes from a Russell and Bromley outlet for £50 , rrp £250 according to label. Decided they were too big and went to list them on vinted. Came across a seller with loads of Russell and Bromley shoes. They had mine listed for £100. Looks like they had done a big haul at the outlet and were now upselling. I sold mine for £45.

I did wonder if they’re fakes. They look genuine but I imagine it’s very hard to tell.

I wondered if they work there but that many pairs… seems unlikely.

With Dc Martens suspect they are fakes.

A lot of companies that give employees heavy discounts on their products, do not allow them to resell the goods

cooldarkroom · 09/11/2025 08:52

I sold a lot of clothes that didn’t fit my son anymore. Timberland/NorthFace etc.
The trousers had cost £100…I sold them at around £15. I was gutted, but the equivalent offers were in that price range.
People also were still bartering. Sorry but actually … Nah ! I then have to box up & drive to the pick up point… almost cheaper to dump in recycling clothes containers 🙁

I tend to donate the kids stuff, as you say it’s rare to actually make any money on them.

Absolutely, it wouldn’t be allowed.

I think it might be outlet boots.
