How best to teach DD and myself to play chess?

I’d like to learn to play chess and I think that my 9 year old DD would enjoy it. I’ve heard it’s about strategy, which I think would hugely appeal to her. What’s the best way for me and DD to learn to play chess together? Just wondering if anyone has any recommendations or tips.
Thank you.

i'm not sure how helpful that would be if both players are beginners ? (In fact, it strikes me as confusing, with double the number of queens etc).

We found a local chess club at our library but DS only went once. I learned through chess.com and a bit from my dad and a friend of mine.

I think DS'S dad taught him a bit.

I can play enough to entertain my son but he's better than me.

Duolingo does chess, daily lessons then practice matches against it.

Duolingo is your best bet

My DC learnt with the Magnus Kingdom of Chess app.

I know how to play chess, but I'm currently going through it on Duolingo and I'm learning loads and really enjoying it. Definitely worth a look!

I've just seen this. OK it skews younger but kind of cool and perhaps bitesize has other resources and games on there

I've also seen a game called storytime chess that gets a good writeup

A brown cartoon dog playing chess in an armchair, looking focussed. Behind him, a black and white chequered chess board, a large red king piece.

There is a really nice book called Chess for Children. Murray Chandler and Helen Milligan. Taught my DS to soundly trash me in weeks 🤨

My daughter and I are learning with an Usborne book , Chess for beginners and a teaching set that has the direction the piece can move in, on the pieces. It's excellent .

Thank you all so much! Lots of ideas there. I realise it’s not ideal that both players are learning how to play, but I don’t mind a challenge. I’ll look at all the ideas. I think it may be sensible for me to learn the basics first and then go from there with DD.

Our chess club strongly recommends 365chess(website) and chess.com.
The Usbourne book is good for beginners.
Once you’ve grasped the basics look at joining a club. The club we go to is for children and do a 15mins talk about tactics then they have games with each other.

Chess.com is a superb website
they also have a kids version at chesskids.com

worth a browse for instruction

Natsku · 26/11/2025 10:10

DS learnt with chess.com and chesskids, they were really good at teaching.
