Why are weight loss injections not OK for IBD?

Just curious
Are they contraindicated for all people with IBD or is it a case by case basis?
What is it about them that makes them inappropriate for people with IBD?

Because of the slowing down of your digestion. Probably ok if you have IBD which is diarrhea based perhaps

Interesting. Do WL injections cause diarrhoea?

I have looked into this a little, being obese and having UC.
It seems it is more cautionary than anything. Side effects could mask a flare which is then not treated properly which then could have impact.
It seems to be perfectly effective in obese IBD patients.
My decision is a No though, I have enough health conditions and risks as it is, I don't need any further risks added to the pile.

I have Crohn’s disease and all the providers I’ve approached won’t allow me to proceed. I have accepted that they have a reason for this and it’s just tough. I could lie and say I have no medical conditions but if it would be very silly of me to do so.

No the opposite. Generally speaking, different people respond differently but your motility slows down, so if you are inclined to constipation it might exacerbate it.

Some people do find their digestion gets quicker but generally its the opposite

I suffered from chronic daily diarrhoea for years, and assumed I was probably getting intolerant to dairy. Still didn’t stop me getting fat though.

On WLI, the diarrhoea has vanished and I now have to eat sensibly and remember to add more fibre to my diet. To be honest, the WLI have cleared up a few issues that started around the menopause so I’m wondering what will happen when I stop taking them and if all the annoying symptoms will return.

Most the drugs are a form of anti inflammatory which those with IBD are told to avoid. I think its because they can mask systems.

StrawberryJangle · 08/11/2025 11:58

I suffered from horrendous constipation whilst on them. I'm not sure how that would affect your condition but it's not something I'd want to exacerbate.
I'd let your GP know. Mine was fine, he could see I was well and happy but but just put a note on file regarding possible symptoms.
It's nothing to be ashamed of (unless GP is awful).

It's done all sorts of funny things to my digestion. Constipation but also diarrhoea at times.
