Golf Balls

I need help from people with knowledge of golf please. I wanted to buy a gift of some golf balls for my son. Easy task I thought- well apparently not! There seems to be a huge range with lots of different prices. Can anyone shed any light on how they are so different? I am looking to buy for a mid twenties beginner but by all accounts is actually quite good and can hit the ball a long way (not sure about the correct direction!) I was going to buy one of those sets of 12 so would prefer to get it right as it would be a bit of a waste if he doesn't use them. Can anyone explain in what way they are different please?

Lots of different brands and then they all do various types designed for low / mid / high handicappers, different swing speeds, distance etc, so it’s going to be a bit of pot luck as to what suits him.

I have a slow swing speed and like Taylor Made Speedsoft or Distance, DH likes Callaway Supersoft, and my friend likes Srixon Soft; Titleist Trufeel is another good one for beginners. Ones that have soft in the name tend to be more forgiving.

These are all about the £15 to £25 mark for a dozen balls. Or you could get him two or three sleeves (3 packs) of balls for him to try to see if he finds he has a preference:

Don’t spend lots of money, as losing balls is pretty common - when I have to rummage around in the undergrowth for my list ball I find a lot of the expensive ones there too.

Thank you so much. That is very helpful. Who knew that golf balls were all different! ?
