Ear microsuction… advice?

I had my left ear microsuctioned on Monday after applying oil for 2 days. I had it checked out a few days prior and was told it was blocked.

Since then it still feels a bit blocked / full. It’s hard to describe but I notice a shift sensation only in that ear — especially if I burp, hiccup, or move my jaw. It feels like something momentarily opens / releases for a second, then goes back to feeling blocked. My hearing’s mostly okay but it just doesn’t feel quite normal.

It wasn’t really painful but because I’ve been touching it quite a lot this week it does feel painful. It does feel like something is in there and if I tap my right ear it feels like I can hear more clearly compared to my left ear.

I got it done at the my local pharmacy. The guy doing it wasn’t ok but didn’t check it I was alright or anything since I told him I had had it done before.

I am really worried I’ve done some serious damage…

I think this is normal! My left ear n really weird for about a week after I had it done last time. I could hear 'whooshing' and had tinnitus along with the weird blocked feeling that shifts when yawning etc.

I'm a bit of a microsuction veteran as I have very waxy ears 🤮 It'll probably just get better itself in a few days!

You may need to do it again? I had mine done on Monday too (very blocked ears, full feeling, hearing loss) and I rang around to work out where to get it done speaking to different service providers. But all of them wanted me to have softened with ear wax for five days, not just two so you some of the wax may have still been too hard to be removed? In my case, he was able to do one ear and the other he said was blocked by fluid behind the ear drum and to see my GP about it (glue ear?). However, for ear he said was still blocked I thought after he suctioned it that it felt much better and doesn't feel blocked, hearing seems to be back to normal so I've not pursued a GP appt as no pain or symptoms now,

So I managed to get a GP appointment this morning as I was in a lot of discomfort yesterday.

Tbh he wasn’t that helpful, but he did look in my ear and said he could see the eardrum and there was no sign of infection or any remaining wax blocking the canal.

After lots of googling and a bit of ChatGPT-ing last night, I thought maybe I could have fluid in my middle ear and / or maybe there was an issue with my Eustachian tube. This is because one of my main symptoms is this muffling sensation whenever I have a sort of hiccup / burp - I feel a sensation in my left ear whilst nothing in my right. It’s hard to describe it. But I have no other symptoms of a blocked ear etc.

The GP said he couldn’t see any fluid but that was it. He prescribed me a mometasone nasal spray which he said I could try. I felt like he wanted to get rid of me to be honest.

Anyway, I’m not sure whether to try it or not or just leave it for a few days. Or maybe just try a bit of oil first as I have been playing with my ear a LOT this week and sticking in tissue…. any tips / advice would be most appreciated!!

Leave it for a few days and see if it settles, although I appreciate it’s sometimes discombobulating.
ENT doctors used to have a saying “The smallest thing you should put in your ear is your elbow” ie don’t be poking stuff in ears!

SilverBlue56 · 08/11/2025 11:26

You need to leave it alone and see if it settles. Stop fiddling with it and wait 5 days.

Yeah not gonna touch it and will have some pain relief too as it’s a bit sore

I ended up with an infection after a microsuction so if your symptoms don't ease get checked out. GP said microsuction often leads to infection.

It seems really painful and tender now urghhh 😢

That definitely sounds like your eustachian tube

It’s still feeling no better. I’m wondering if I need someone to have another look. It just feels like their is fluid in there

It it's painful/tender, definitely get it checked out. Nasal sprays are a good idea. Massaging the ear lobe helps too and moves things around a bit.
