Long haul flight sleep help

Femalefootyfan · 07/11/2025 13:27

I have a very long haul flight early next year and even though I’ll be in business class, I rarely get more than about 2 or 3 hours sleep. I’ve tried wine, herbal sleeping tablets, wear earplugs and an eye mask and still only get a few hours.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to what else I can try so I can get a decent nights sleep? The 13 hour flight I have leaves at 9pm so it’ll be nighttime anyway.

Foot hammock and TRTL neck pillow, blanket and I’m off.

Many airlines don’t allow foot hammocks. You should check the airlines policy prior. But if you’re in business, you really won’t need one.

Good luck OP.
Wine is only thing that sort of works for me. And only a little bit.
I can sleep if I can lie flat but that's usually not feasible.
Why can't you sleep if you can lie flat, are you not really flat?

I know people who sleep well sitting up bastards but I'm not one of them either.

I did sleep most of the journey from Schipol to Kilomanjaro, once. Plane was mostly empty so I could lie down. That.Was.Awesome. Wish I could fly entire journey lying flat. every flight > 8 hrs long.

I think I struggle with sleeping because even with ear plugs, I can hear the drone of the engines and I’m aware of other people being there. I do lay flat but I might try laying a bit more upright as has been suggested. I can nod off for half an hour or so if in economy or on my sofa but for proper sleep, I have to be in bed, in the dark with complete silence. My DH always gets a good sleep on flights with minimal fuss so I hate him at those times and I’m always jealous

No sympathy - you’re in Business! You get to lie flat!

Blimey! Don't drink alcohol if you take phenergan. It makes it much more sedating, and can even impair your breathing.

I take zopiclone
managed 10 hrs sleep recently business class
dont listen to people saying ‘oh but you need to be alert’. Fuck that if the plane goes down I’d rather be asleep

good luck getting it from a GP tho, I buy mine abroad or online

WeCouldBeNiceToEachOther · 07/11/2025 21:33

Just take some night nurse or Nytol.

I’ve never had an issue and have flown with loads of airlines now, obvs not the inflatable ones which are banned. I missed she was business. Defo no need then.

This! International traveller for years and you need some proper medical sleeping tablets. Get ready for bed, have a wee and settle down with that on board. I’m a terrible sleeper and need total blackout, silence, right temp, bloody full moon and fairies to get to sleep… so I dont ever anticipate a good sleep. Zopiclone or Numark pharmacy sleep tabs do it for me.

Have you tried noise cancelling headphones? They’re a game changer - way more effective than ear plugs on flights in my experience

editing to add: previous posters are very correct about getting rest! Scientifically proven that just lying still as if you are going to sleep is almost as good as actual sleep (they tested reaction times and alertness)
so don’t stress if you’re just lightly dozing as it’s still doing you good

Zopiclone. Or melatonin helps if you don’t want to be knocked out.

I find earphones with chilled music or a lightweight podcast much better than just earplugs. Earplugs cut the sound of talking but not the drone of the engine.

In business, try to get comfy and basically ready to sleep as soon as you get on board. I find I’m most likely to sleep more or less on takeoff, not sure whether it’s the vibration, pressure change, whatever!
