Have you ever experienced an earthquake or earth tremor?

I appreciate that this may be a sensitive subject for some, given the often dangerous and destructive nature of seismic activity. Thankfully, my one and only exposure was on the mild side. I don't remember much about it except that it occurred one night in the last 25 years or so and it woke me up as my home shivered and trembled for a few seconds. I think the epicentre might have been in Lincolnshire. That's all!

I think that one was 2008 (I was going through fertility treatment and was late up to do the trigger shot) I lived near a large steel works in Yorkshire at the time and I and many locals thought they'd been an explosion at the plant. I put the radio on and they said it was an earthquake and I was so relieved.

Yes, in 2015 I was up early hours breastfeeding dd1 and felt a minor earthquake/tremor in the south east of england - i can't remember the technical details!! I felt it very much in my stomach, it was a peculiar feeling.

Brentinger · 06/11/2025 20:42

6.9 in Bali - it was like no other feeling I've ever experienced!

I grew up in New Zealand which is part of the Pacific Ring of Fire tectonic belt of volcanoes and earthquakes. I’ve experienced countless earthquakes in my life, although I no longer live there.

At school we had earthquakes drills (dive under desks or door frames), and had to bring a few cans of food and drink each year to be keep in storage in case a major quake occurred and the school was cut off. At work we had to keep a pair of trainers there as I worked in the business district and we were told we would be likely knee deep in glass if we had to walk home.

When out on the street when an earthquake occurred I’ve twice seen the ground ahead of me ripple, and one occasion I was on the phone when one occurred and the phone cut out for a few seconds before reconnecting.

My dog would often bark maybe 5-10 seconds before an earthquake would start, as I believe they can hear the ‘roar’ before humans. I’ve heard it a split second before the earth begins to move.

I don’t miss living in an earthquake zone!

Yes a small one in London in around 2007/2008 and another small one in the Maldives. Maldives freaked me out more because of how vulnerable I felt in the middle of the ocean! I can’t imagine experiencing a large one it must be utterly terrifying.

shellyleppard · 06/11/2025 20:45

Yes when I was pregnant with my second son. His dad thought I had started labour as the bed was shaking!!! His elder brother slept through it all....

Justwanttobebythesea · 06/11/2025 20:45

Yes when I was in Tokyo - high rise building was shaking a lot it was terrifying

PuppyMonkey · 06/11/2025 20:46

Couldn’t tell you what year it was, maybe early 2000s, but there was a pretty big one where I live in Derbyshire. I was on a walk at a local beauty spot and the ground literally rose up while I was standing chatting with my friends. A few minutes later, the same thing - aftershock I think. I’ll never forget it.

TheSmallAssassin · 06/11/2025 20:46

Yes, a little one in this country, it was only barely perceptible but I was a bit excited to feel it!

PurpleFlower1983 · 06/11/2025 20:46

Yes, a small one here, around 1am about 17 years ago and a few bigger ones when on holiday in Greece in the 90s.

Pinkfluffypencilcase · 06/11/2025 20:49

Twice. One i thought someone was shaking my bed. To find out later there’d been a quake and the chimney had broken!

TheTecknician · 06/11/2025 20:51

It must be quite an otherworldly experience too see the ground shaking before you.

Yes, July this year in Almeria, Spain. It was around 6am and I woke up to my bed scooting along the hotel room floor. The walls were literally wobbling. It’s not something I can describe accurately, but an incredibly odd feeling. I grabbed DD who was luckily sleeping next to me and it stopped a few seconds later. It was 5.5 magnitude, and caused some local damage and the airport roof collapsed partially. I wasn’t scared as such, but that could’ve been because I wasn’t aware what was going on in the moment!

lurvy · 06/11/2025 20:52

I've experienced a 6, so moderate. Quite a strange experience, the dogs went nuts moments before the shaking started. No damage done around me.

justasking111 · 06/11/2025 20:53

We've always had the odd tremor in N Wales. Funny feeling when it happens.

WinoTime · 06/11/2025 20:54

Yes many years ago I was visiting family in San Frrancso area and was woken in the night by my bed shaking. It was quite frightening but I soon worked it out.

I have since then felt small quakes at home in UK but I think if I had t experienced the larger one I wouldn’t have noticed

Flomingho · 06/11/2025 20:54

Yes 4.7 in Cyprus. Although only minor to moderate it woke us up in the night and felt all the furniture moving, it was quite scary.

TheDandyLion · 06/11/2025 20:54

Mid Wales in July this year. Only a tiny one at around midnight but I felt it just as I was going to bed.

user1471453601 · 06/11/2025 20:54

I remember the 2008 one. Only because I kind of woke up and had the fleeting thought "seems like an earthquake" and promptly fell back to sleep.

adult child's partner (we share a house) apparently checked the house and the outside.

And once in Greece. I'd just sat on my sunbed and, you may have done this, my sunbed jurcked. I thought I just hadn't put the sun bed up properly. Later, when we knew it was an earthquake I was telling someone I knew about this. They said they were in the loo and wondered what the hell they'd passed.

Made me laugh, I'm easily pleased.

barskits · 06/11/2025 20:55

A friend of mine heard one. Her house at the time had a basement and it acted like a giant loudspeaker. Somewhere in the midlands about 20 years ago I think.

We do get small ones round here sometimes, but they aren't big enough to feel.

The only one I've experienced is the earthquake simulator they have in the Science Museum.

Greenwitchart · 06/11/2025 20:56

Two in California. Really odd sensation.

I remember this one. I was living in Newcastle and my flatmate thought I'd hidden under her bed and was shaking it 🤨

sharkstale · 06/11/2025 20:58

I was working in an office in Turkey. It was so minor I was just confused for a mo, wondering if a strong gust of wind had blown through the office and shaken the desk 🤣

NoisyMonster678 · 06/11/2025 20:58

One was when I was half a sleep and felt my bed move from left to right a few times and I remember it felt relaxing which is slightly wierd but I was sleepy and did not realise what was happening.

The next one I was on the 15th floor of a glass building where a metal filing cabinet and a stationary cupboard started waltzing around the office with as much grace as 3 rhinos on an ice rink

I'm trying to forget it

Both minor tremors occured on a 20 mile radius of Manchester City Centre.

I lived very close to the epicentre and it was surprisingly dramatic. In fact I was talking to a friend who lived about ten miles further away from it only the other day and her experience wasn’t as noticeable as mine.

we were in bed and it woke us up. I knew straight away it was an earthquake and ran to the doorframe and stood under it. Dh seemed a bit more stunned and was in bed while I was yelling it was an earthquake. I was genuinely scared the chimney would come down and through the roof. The house was moving backwards and forwards and the noise was so loud. The other closed doors were banging like mad in their frames, we had a big bookcase fixed to the wall and that was banging. Dh had got out of bed and ran down the landing and struggled to stay upright as the house was moving so much.

there was a roaring sort of noise going on throughout which faded away as the shaking dampened down.
