My DM has recently been in hospital, and we want to purchase a thank you gift for the ward staff. We’ve come up with the idea of a hamper, so I’m looking for ideas what to include. So far we have the following ideas,

Cup a soup (for when they don’t have time to take a break)
Protein bars
Some nice tea/coffee
Hand cream
Deodorant (for a quick fresh up during the shift)
Dry shampoo.

Any other suggestions?

This is such a lovely idea. I recently had a baby and I was blown away by how amazing all the midwives treated us in the five days we were in hospital. They were incredible and went above and beyond. I asked one of them as we left, what a good gift to buy for the team would be. And she said “honestly, the best gift you could give us is an email to our manager, mentioning us by name and what it was we did for you. We are under appreciated in our job and something like that would mean the world.”
So I would say, still go for your hamper but also see if you can find the email address of their superior and send a really long, gushing email about them!

I agree with the above. Working in a hospital, a message to the manager about a member of staff is far more valuable and can be used in their annual log (I can’t remember the name) as that needs to include feedback as part of their registration. I can see you are trying to be thoughtful but things like deodorant are quite personal.

Definitely write to appropriate chiefs praising the care, naming names if possible. Very uplifting for staff and additionally incentivises good treatment for future patients.

I left a gift bag of nice cereal bars, bags of sweets and 20 x £5 Costa gift cards (there was a Costa in the main entrance).

Black pens. And a few red ones for the CD book!

And definitely this.

My son was in hospital for 10 months and on various wards during that time so I've done my fair share of thank you gifts/hampers.

pens
tea bags
biscuits
crisps
sweets

etc

Cards with personal messages always go down well too.

Crunchymum · 06/11/2025 13:17

I'd scrap the deodorant and dry shampoo - they may think you are hinting!

Definitely an email naming and praising all involved in your care but a hamper of treats would also be appreciated I'm sure.

I went to Costco and bought a large box of individually wrapped biscuits for the staff, also a card with a personal message. I can't imagine using emergency dry shampoo and deodorant TBH.

Violetmouse · 06/11/2025 13:31

Agree with some treats and skipping shampoo and deodorant! Maybe some biscuits and some chocolate, try and include some gluten and / or dairy free options. A handwritten card is always very special too.

With Costa gift cards just be warned that not all the hospital concession costa shops are able to take these - found that out the hard way!

Ah I did this with my DH’s brilliant chemo nurses. I made two huge tins of shortbread. Got them each a thank you card and put £20 Sainsbury’s voucher in each of them.
They loved it.

I work on a very busy ward at a hospital as a HCA, hamper is a great idea but loose the shampoo and deodrant. We love pens (black and red) highlighters, board markers (we usually have to buy our own) we get very excited about a nice pen.
Chocolates, nice biscuits always we'll received. Nice coffee for breaks, decent teabags ( we drink the nhs crap coffee)
What does always get appreciated is written cards or if the hospital has a public page so nice words on there, if you can get it contact the ward manager to pass on to the staff on complimentary message x

Individually wrapped biscuits are very welcome.
