Bonfire night chaos in cities

I was on the fence about banning fireworks, but this has changed my mind!

This is shocking but unsurprising. People now are unable to control themselves and allowing them to legally access explosives is simply insanity.

It'll only get worse until the spineless government bans them for public use.

Gottocopebymyself · 06/11/2025 10:39

I've been a long time advocate of banning fireworks.

But the situation now is just horrendous.

I'm in Scotland and the problem has been growing to the extent both Edinburgh and Glasgow have tried to prevent organised anti social trouble by banning the sale of fireworks in certain known troubled areas In the run up to November 5th. I don't know if other places have done the same.

But even despite this Edinburgh had to launch a full scale operation involving police helicopters to keep a cap on outbreaks of bonfire night violence.
What a waste of public money that this is necessary.

Why not just ban the damned things to prevent this mindless violence and also make life more bearable for wildlife and pets.

smallglassbottle · 06/11/2025 11:36

I wonder who owns the firework industry. There must be a reason why they haven't been banned for public use after all this time.

I've moved areas now
But wrote to a London MP about the problem a few years ago. I know him quite well, or I did, so I know he was using the politest terms possible but I think he thought I was just being silly.

It's probably worth another try now. Your post has actually made me realise that I wrote to him in a time where things were much better, but we still had loads of problems with antisocial adults letting them off in the street. I saw buses trying to swerve them and so on, neighbours had them through a letterbox.

But yeah, things are so much worse. It might be another try.

Fortunately, where I live now, it's not really an issue so it seems a bit pointless for me to write to this MP?

You should definitely write. I think there's an organisation trying to ban them and there's often petitions going on. We have to keep trying. I know people with horses and livestock hate them, as do wildlife organisations. It's not just cities being affected. They're so much louder than they once were and are very different from the small domestic back garden ones that used to be sold. People using them as missiles must be so frightening to be around. Those videos look like the bloody Purge.

Yeah, I've wondered the same.

Tell me about it. Work in fire control, last night was a nightmare. It gets worse every year and I stand by what I say every year: knowing the average level of intelligence in this country, the general public absolutely should not be allowed access to explosives. Many of them couldn't be trusted with a toaster.

smallglassbottle · 09/11/2025 13:00

They won't ban them because they're very popular amongst certain demographics.

They've always been popular amongst most demographics.

Outside of bonfire night and weddings?

Who?

Tutorpuzzle · 09/11/2025 13:08

It’s absolutely bizarre that explosives are sold over the counter along with your bar of Cadbury’s. Teenagers have always been stupid, and will do the most dangerous thing possible, but parents buying these things to detonate in front of their children should probably be under some sort of psychiatric care.

I’ve said it on a previous thread, but if the deaths of a family of five in Hounslow (in a fire caused by fireworks) is not enough to change the law, then fuck knows what is.

smallglassbottle · 09/11/2025 13:10

TooBigForMyBoots · 09/11/2025 13:05

Who?

People from other cultures who use them all the time. Ds lives in such an area in London. He tells me it goes on every day. It's the animals I feel sorry for.

TheNinkyNonkyIsATardis · 09/11/2025 13:17

I love fireworks, but for the life of me I can't understand why public sales aren't limited to the low volume ones.

We've got a couple of fountains and a something that pops out coloured lights for 30 seconds then fizzes a bit.

Outside of bonfire night and weddings has nothing to do with your statement that "They won't ban them because they're very popular amongst certain demographics."

They're very popular amongst Brits, Sikhs, Chinese when it comes to celebrations and they're popular with lots of other demographics at various weddings.

There is no 'certain' demographic that they're more popular with.

Obfuscate all you want. They won't be banned as they won't want to appear racist.

Perfectly happy to be labelled anything you see fit. Enjoy your ever deteriorating country.

Office365Error · 09/11/2025 13:45

Banning fireworks will not make yobs behave better. They will find something else to make mess with. Addressing the fact that lots of undeages people are running riot causing issues might be better, but way more difficult.
I do however agree that they are way to noisy now and silent or low volume ones would be grand.

Bonfire Night is about as British as it gets. Ridiculously popular in such urban ethnic areas as….. Lewes, and Cornwall.
