If you had no commitments at all how would you spend Christmas?

Due to various reasons DH and I have no commitments and no plans over the Christmas period this year. ( Christmas eve, Christmas day and Boxing Day)

No family visiting until after this time

Elderly family members and adult children are elsewhere this year.

We are both off work for 10 days,

We are not sad about this in anyway as we will be celebrating with family a few days later but for the first time ever we have no commitments at all over Christmas.

This means we can do whatever we want for Christmas without worrying about offending anyone but can’t decide what to do.

We have thought about going away but I don’t really want to spend Christmas in a hotel room, a lodge/self catering maybe an option but prices are really high at that time of year.
Can’t go abroad as we want to see family after Boxing Day.

Local restaurants are now fully booked ( my own fault for not looking sooner) but we could travel to a restaurant

We could stay at home eating chocolate or cheese ( this is my favourite idea so far)

if you had no plans for the Christmas period and could do whatever you wanted for those three days, what would you do?

Any ideas welcome!

There would be whatever I wanted to watch on TV, or a new book. There would be cheese, wine, nice food that I really like. Curled up on the sofa for a couple of days, beneath the sofa. Dog walking and maybe, if it’s not pouring, a nice bike ride.

Actually, I think it’s early enough to tell the non-cohabiting bloke to make other plans. Christmas is over 6 weeks away, loads of time for him to find someone else to cook, wash up, wipe up, find wine, clear up after him and whatnot.

Thank you for such a thought provoking post. This year, I shall do my thing and himself and his son and son’s GF can do something else.

I'd add roast potatoes and gravy to the list, but otherwise in with cheese and chocolate sounds amazing. Get some nice walks in, then come home to chill.

TattooStan · 04/11/2025 17:40

We've very carefully engineered things to make sure that we are in exactly this position!
Christmas Eve we'll go for a drink in town, maybe meet up with a couple of friends if they're free. We'll watch Bad Santa - one of the only Christmas films DH will watch - and have homemade smoked mackerel pate for dinner.
On the day, we'll have smoked salmon, blinis and champagne for breakfast and open our presents, then go for a hike. Then have an afternoon Christmas roast, with the fire lit, and watch Die Hard. We'll no doubt play a board game that I will have bought DH for Christmas.
The next day we'll chill and eat leftovers.
I can't imagine struggling to think how I'd spend the time in my own home and local area. Give me a month of no plans and I'll love every second!

I'd get into bed and stay there, maybe having a bath every evening and a change of pyjamas. Would binge watch something like the west wing and eat snack food and drink wine. Heated blanket on me and cats on top of that. By day three I might venture out for a walk and a nice coffee.

worcesterpear · 04/11/2025 17:52

I'd consider going abroad if I could afford it, somewhere that doesn't celebrate Christmas so is unlikely to have any decorations up. Or I would consider renting a cottage somewhere remote like Scotland or Cornwall. But most likely, especially just for three days, I would stay at home, go on a walk, watch a film or two, read and have things like cheese and wine like you say. For christmas dinner, I would be tempted to have something like Chinese or Thai.

TamarindCottage · 04/11/2025 17:55

I’d order in fabulous food and drink, and turn off your phones from Christmas Eve @ 2100 until 1100 on Boxing Day. Sounds lush

SpottyAardvark · 04/11/2025 17:55

If we had no commitments over Christmas, we would ignore Christmas completely & go on holiday somewhere warm & sunny. Just the two of us.

LuigiGhostDog · 04/11/2025 17:57

I’d book a beautiful log cabin off grid somewhere in the Arctic circle to experience the Polar Night, Alaska, Northern Norway or Svalbard.

Sit by the fire and read books, cosy fairy lights everywhere, hot chocolate.

A simple Christmas dinner.

sanityisamyth · 04/11/2025 17:58

I wouldn’t. I’d ignore it completely. I spend a few hours every Christmas Day volunteering to deliver meals to the homeless. It’s my favourite part of the day.

Refreshing0 · 04/11/2025 18:02

I am that person no commitments at all.
I dont do christmas either its lovely.

MaplePumpkin · 04/11/2025 18:04

I’d get glammed up with my boyfriend and go out for a delicious three course Christmas dinner… on Christmas Eve.
Then on Christmas Day we’d snuggle up, watch Christmas films and eat festive picky bits and cheese. Do an at home escape room, some board games, Christmas quiz etc. Heaven!

Iwouldratherbemuckingout · 04/11/2025 18:27

What a lovely thread!
Christmas Eve - drinks with my bestie and her partner followed by relaxing luxurious dinner.
Christmas day up to do the horses, Christmas morning ride with obligatory tinsel and Santa hats, then home for a late breakfast of scrambled eggs, big chunks of honey roasted gammon and a bagel.

then pressies, then the afternoon cuddled up on the settee in front of the fire watching cheesy Xmas films. Tea would be lots of yummy bits and pieces from M&S we can eat happily sloshed.

Boxing Day pay someone to do the horses and go for a long walk on the beach after a very long lie in with multiple cups of tea, and breakfast, in bed.

heaven.

Sunshineandgrapefruit · 04/11/2025 18:28

Exactly as I do. With DH and kids having a lovely lazy day with a massive roast.

MellowPinkDeer · 04/11/2025 18:29

I 100% would LOVE to spend Christmas in a hotel, on the beach and reading. That would be bliss, utter bliss. Can you leave a few days earlier and travel back Christmas Day / Boxing Day?

Cakeandcardio · 04/11/2025 19:33

Go out for dinner on Christmas Eve then you are still having that experience. We usually do Chinese. Then Christmas and Boxing Day in the house with lovely food, TV and books. Maybe a walk if you fancy

Rocknrollstar · 04/11/2025 19:45

Gran Canaria. The friends we went away with in the summer are booked to go but we do have commitments and so can’t go with them.

youdoyoudear · 04/11/2025 19:59

I would absolutely hunker down at home for the three days, eat and drink whatever you want, stay in PJs and binge watch whatever grabs you. Perfection!

JulianClarysDog · 04/11/2025 20:10

A few little bits to open with cups of tea
Croissants for breakfast
Wrap up warm for a walk
Lunch out - Cote are doing Christmas lunch if you’re near a Cote?
Home for a Christmas film and snuggle in
Bath with posh bubble bath and into bed early

piscofrisco · 04/11/2025 20:18

I would go to somewhere remote like the Hebrides with food, booze and books . Or else somewhere swish like the French alps. Which is where we were going when it was just dh and I but had to cancel as can’t leave my mum on her own

Jk987 · 04/11/2025 20:26

No question, in Australia with my sister and family who moved out there.

Justwanttobebythesea · 04/11/2025 20:42

I’m not good at being stuck indoors so if Christmas Day is a home day I would prob want to be out Christmas Eve maybe cinema in the afternoon and dinner or Christmas carols church service and pub drinks. Boxing Day I would want a drive for a long walk and pub lunch - ideally by the beach but failing that countryside somewhere.

EmmaWotsit · 04/11/2025 21:19

If one more person says snuggle or snuggly, I swear I will barf!

countdowntonap · 04/11/2025 22:18

Money no barrier, the three day Christmas package here https://thetawny.co.uk/christmas-at-the-tawny/

Otherwise, wake up and exchange gifts and have a lush breakfast. Wrap up for a big walk to a local pub that’s open for drinks 12-2pm (seems the norm) and walk back for late Xmas lunch. Quick snooze. Then wrap up for a short walk to freshen up and peek in people’s festive houses before enjoying a cosy night of amazing snack food.

Christmas at The Tawny

Our dazzling 3 night Christmas package features fabulous food, live entertainment, heaps of Christmas spirit and plenty of time to relax.

Cottage by the sea,
Load of good food, books and friends!

iamnotalemon · 04/11/2025 22:49

I have no commitments and spending it on the beach with friends. If I was in the UK, it would be lots of good food watching Christmas films inside.
