Vinted asking for info e.g. NI number

Over the past 18 months I've been having massive clear out and sold lots on Vinted (not just clothing). Just had a message saying that as I'd sold xxx amount with sales of xxxxx they needed some further details, one of which was my NI number. Is this usual do you think or is it leading to my "income" from Vinted being taxed?

tax is always on profits not sales whether a tiny business or a big business
the revenue limit is a trigger for maybe checking

someone selling identical t shirts in 3 colourways and 6 different sizes and having 10+ of every item available almost certainly a business,

someone selling 100 random items in various sizes and ages but all different almost certainly someone decluttering regardless of whether sale value is a total of £500 or £5000

if you sold your old car on ebay it would definitely be moore than £1700 but of course it is highly unlikely you are selling car for more than you paid for it

don't panic don't stop selling but yes you must provide NI number

Friend has been asked for photocopy of passport on eBay. She says she doesn't sell nearly enough to be taxed on it and was initially concerned it was a scam. (Tbh I feared it was.)

Just add your N.I. Number HMRC will work out if you need to pay tax on your earnings or not. (Almost certainly not for most Vinted sellers).

i don’t trust Vinted with my data. This data breach from a few months ago where Vinted leaked National Insurance numbers is still fresh in my memory.

I got a message asking for my NI number today - I didn’t realise 30 sales on Vinted triggers this request. I had mistakenly thought it was only based on a financial threshold.

I’ve sold just over 30 items so far this calendar year, all personal items, at a cost lower than original purchase price. & now I have to give my NI number where, no doubt, the onus will also be on me to prove I’m not a ‘trader’!

I feel fed up. I’m not a trader, but am having to risk personal data being given to a platform with a recent history of breach of NI data! As well as probably having to jump through hoops to prove I am a legitimate private seller, making no profit that warrants being taxed! I can see Vinted will also probably close my account if I don’t give my NI number! I don’t see any joy in this.

Vinted shoppers hit by huge error with hundreds of personal details exposed

Shortly after opening Vinted Pro - which allows sellers to operate as sole traders - Vinted was forced to close the upgrade function after the National Insurance details of hundreds of users was made public

Yes, if you have sold over £1000 in a year, probably tax year, you will need to declare it on a tax return.

Not true if your selling your personal belongings that you no longer want or need, all these items will be less than what you originally paid for them. You only pay tax on profit not losses. If you had 30 dresses or shoes paid 20 each and sold them for a 10 your technically making a loss.

SheinIsShite · 07/11/2025 08:43

You are not "technically" making a loss, you are making a loss.

It's £1000 profit, not gross earnings. You get up to £1000 tax free allowance anyway. It's checking for business sellers who are trading.

Just supply your NI number.

PLEASE Don't ever give your NI number to anyone or any company (unless you work for them), HMRC will have it anyway and they only ever legitimately contact you by formal letter.
(Selling your own old clothes etc is not trading or a 'business').
If you are worried about this, ask the originator for the exact reason why they have requested this.

Vinted tell you the reason when requesting it.
Yes, HMRC know your NI number - but this confirms it's you. I don't want to be getting a tax bill for someone with the same name as me because they've tried to match up the names and NI numbers themselves.

Of course up to the individual whether they supply it or not, but it's legitimate and I want to continue selling.

BettyYeti1 · 13/12/2025 08:14

Does anyone know what happens after the 2nd January deadline if you don't supply NI number? Will they close your account / block you from selling?

84wood · 13/12/2025 08:25

I'm aware I'm not eligible for tax as I've only had a clear out. Most items go for £1 but I did sell more than 30. Vinted asked for my NI number, which I just don't trust them with, so I've stopped selling and closed the account. Shame really but my NI is a powerful ID check and I only give this to trusted sources.
