Has anyone negotiated a shorter notice period in the NHS?

Hi, I'm handing my notice in tomorrow. B7, NHS England. I can't deal with the threat of redundancy, the stress is triggering my Hemiplegic migraines and I'm stuck in endless rounds of stroke like symptoms. Notice period is 3 months. I want to be gone by Christmas. Any advice please?

This sounds really tough. Could you hand your notice in and then get signed off sick by the doctor. Sounds like the stress and physical symptoms would warrant that.

Is it the actual job making you stressed or the threat of redundancy? Are you eligible for redundancy pay?

Thank you so much for replying! It's a combination of both I think stress wise. The job isn't what I thought it was (I only joined NHSE at the start of the FY from a Trust) as soon as I started they announced the abolition. I put in an expression of interest for voluntary redundancy but I'll get about 17k max due to PENP and the govt won't make a decision on VR as there's no funding from Treasury. Meanwhile I'm battling work whilst the left half of my body is completely paralysed at least 2-3 weeks in the month. Even holding my phone to type this is a struggle. Plus I've started having thoughts that I'm worth more to DH & DC dead than alive, with death in service, pension benefits etc.

I just think the who uncertainty is doing me so much damage, physically (extended HM can cause vascular damage) and mentally. I don't want to go off sick for references and I actually don't want to do that to my team either. I just want to go asap Sad

Have you got any annual leave to use (remember to pro rata it to the date you would like to finish on)?

If not, I would hand in your notice, clear up any essential things that you feel are necessary and get a sick note for the rest of your notice period.

When (not if!!) I win the million on the premium bonds I will definitely not be working my notice period (also nhs). In reality what are they going to do - I won’t be asking for a reference.

Hood you get it sorted and start to feel better soon.

Could you not go off with stress and work your notice off? If your clinical really can't see the nhs currently offering you a shorter notice period but you can always ask?

princesspadam · 03/11/2025 12:05

I would go off on the sick and stay off for the remainder of your notice

This sounds really hard 😔 Sending hugs. Whatever you decide about your current job it sounds like you need to be signed off sick for some much needed rest.

Please dont think this - you are worth a million times more as a mother and wife.
Do you have someone you could talk to about your feelings?
Sorry if i missed it, but have you been to the GP recently also about your health issues?

Thank you all for your responses. I am not clinical, operations. I have an appointment with the GP this afternoon for a HRT review so will mention how I'm feeling - I have had MRI'd and seen neurology about 3 weeks ago for the migraines. They just prescribed propranolol for the migraines but I'm already on amitriptyline so I'm slightly worried about being a zombie on both.

I hope you manage to talk with the GP today and that everything goes well whatever you decide about handing your notice in 💐

Thank you. You are so supportive. Do you work in MH by any chance? You've been lovely and I want to acknowledge that Flowers

Your union rep should be able to help you with this. 💐
