Cleaning - when is it ever enough?

TinyWeeFairieHouse · 02/11/2025 13:51

Today I have:
Disinfected kitchen work surfaces
Loaded dishwasher
Washed things that can't go in dishwasher
Stripped and remade our bed
Loaded washing machine (will start tumble dryer off when first load is finished) will reload washing machine when it finishes this load.
Hoovered
Cleaned bathroom Inc mopping floor.
The kitchen will be redone after our evening meal, the bed is a weekly job but most of the others are daily.
Not cleaning related but I still have a full Sunday roast to make in a bit.....
We are a family of 4 and also have two dogs and a cat (so dirt/mess creators!)
I feel like it never ends, I am constantly wiping something or picking something up and putting it away but the universe just doesn't bloody reward me for my efforts 🤣
Why, just why am I not living in something akin to a show-home! I should be I am sure!
Please tell me there are others out there like me, fighting the daily fight and not being rewarded with the sparkly insta-home they so justly deserve 🤷‍♀️
Lighthearted just in case anyone wondered!

Get a cleaner ?

barskits · 02/11/2025 14:01

Perhaps enlist the other three people in the house (age permitting).

mumofoneAloneandwell · 02/11/2025 14:03

Its never ever enough op

Its just endless cleaning in a cycle until you die 😪

WonderlandWasAllAHoax · 02/11/2025 14:03

Why are you doing all that yourself when you live with three other people?

Why clean and disinfect a kitchen only to mess it up again with a roast dinner?

Iloveeverycat · 02/11/2025 14:05

I never have a Sunday roast. Sunday is for relaxing before going back to work. Why would all the kitchen need to be redone. Why does it have to be all done daily. Sounds like you need to drop your standards and relax a bit.

I agree about Sunday roasts - I've never understood why people want to spend ages cooking a meal that creates a ton of mess 😂

This!

I'm the same Op, it's relentless.

No matter how much I do, I rarely wouldn't be embarrassed by someone dropping by unexpectedly

We all happen to like a Sunday roast, perfect Autumn /winter food.
I don't want to drop my (not particularly high) standards, I want to be justly rewarded for my efforts with a sparkly home🤣
Ideally I will win the lottery and get a lovely live in house keeper who keeps everything spick and span (and I will probably run around before them tidying and cleaning because I will feel awful that someone is cleaning my mess!).

I think that's just daily cleaning - or at the least a weekend clean.

It's the dogs - mine leave hair everywhere and definitely contribute to the dust. Muddy paw prints, more washing etc

Plus you have others in the house who leave the toilet in a mess, leave hair in the shower, need to be fed, use dishes!

If you lived on your own without pets you would be in a sparkly show home. Can't they all move out? They could live with the ones I'll turf out too?!

Which is fair enough, but it's creating work for yourself to cook and clean up after one every week.

Why doesn't anyone else cook and help? Confused

Cat1504 · 02/11/2025 16:15

I clean for around 30 mins every day…10 mins here….10 mins there….my house is always clean and tidy when I go to bed….you have to keep on cleaning if you don’t want to live in a shit tip🤷‍♀️

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 02/11/2025 16:21

I suspect I have lower standards than you - I don’t hoover or mop floors daily - and I’ve got a dog. It’s rare that we wash or dry anything by hand. I tend to do the loading/unloading of dishwasher / washing machine whilst I’m in the kitchen doing something else. But there’s just me and DH in the house now, and he does his share. I probably felt like you a few years ago.

Foodwise - a stew in the slow cooker is nice and autumny but less washing up. You could also consider going out for your roast - I don’t know your finances, but a mid-week carvery is generally cheaper than weekend.

TartanMammy · 02/11/2025 16:36

Sounds like a normal day tbh. I have a cleaner but I still do all the things you just listed.

Apart from cleaning the bathroom (I do quick wipe round daily) and changing bed they're all daily tasks. You missed emptying the bins. It's an endless cycle!

atinydropofcherrysherry · 02/11/2025 16:38

It is never enough. I tidy and wipe things every day and there are still so many corners with dust, cobwebs etc - we have books, decor and other objects on top of every furniture service

CosySeason · 02/11/2025 16:39

I clean everyday and still have to clean everyday. I need to lower my standards.

yes, I don't have a cleaner and do a proper scrub of all things every two weeks, but I definitely clean daily various small parts here and there

my husband does a lot of housework, unfortunately the result thereof is not a nice tidy home. He throws bins out, does the washing in the washing money, in and out, then clothes get thrown on the bed - I have to put this away and make bed. He cooks his daily few recipes on rotation, literally runs the pots under water and chucks them on the side of the sink - I have to put them all away, scrub the sink, hobs, counter. Etc. I tried talking to him, it never fetches his attention as unto a change. You do it wife

Honestly, I agree. People (and animals) living in a house are going to create mess. We don't have DC but we have four animals and I vacuum and mop floors daily, wipe the surfaces and wash up multiple times (no dishwasher), and give the bathroom a once-over everyday. Then there's bins, pet bowls, their blankets - it's constant.

But little and often works and it honestly doesn't feel like much.

schoolrundashsprint · 02/11/2025 16:48

I could have written this @TinyWeeFairieHouse. I feel your pain. I am the same, I'm at my happiest in a show home standard house but I just can't maintain it long enough. My house is always very clean as I am constantly wiping something down but the trail of destruction the children make with such ease pains me greatly. I left the house tidy before we went away last week and we have a very valued cleaner who came whilst we were away. The house was pristine when we came home. 24 hours later and we have stuff strewn throughout the house and I'm fretting over tidying up 🤦‍♀️. The children and my dh help and I'm not alone in tackling everything, but it's just never enough.

Things that have helped me in recent months:
I spend an evening tidying and deep cleaning a single room, really thoroughly- the kitchen is usually my focus as it's the biggest room. With the children asleep no one can make a mess. I listen to a podcast I really enjoy to pass the time.
I am decluttering a different area in the house most weeks - I sorted the children's wardrobe out (clothes that don't fit etc.) most recently.

If I had the money my dream would be to have a housekeeper 😆 but for now I'm trying to reduce the stuff that I otherwise keep reorganising as that is the real source of my stress.
