Urgh... Migraines

I'm just over 40, and migraines seem to be becoming more frequent around my period. I was sick with it this morning, and am finally feeling a bit more normal.
I've used painkillers, sleep ,cold compresses, a hot shower and a bath to get rid of it. Does anyone have any other tips please?

Syndol original with the antihistamine in them.
Mine really ramped up in my early 40s too. Hrt helped, which I started at 44. I still get them, but no where near as often.

Mine are becoming more frequent to, defo hormonal. As bizarre as it sounds full sugar fizzy pop and/or chocolate seem to work for me...in addition to the painkillers, cold compress and sleep you've already mentioned

I use a wheat bag, heat it in the microwave and try to get to sleep asap. I take zomig which is a triptan on prescription from the GP. Sleep is everything. Says me, writing whilst I wait for my HRT gel to dry so I can go to sleep.

Another vote for a bottle of coke and a chocolate bar, too.

But mostly Sumatriptan from your GP.

Dioralyte

Mine only stopped when I was put on progesterone.

For me it was a game changer

Toddlerteaplease · 01/11/2025 22:32

Same here. Sumatriptan and anadin extra are the things that work for me.

Agree with the full fat coke/sugar and caffeine.

I agree with this…Syndol original (dark blue box as opposed to the ‘newer’ version which is in a lighter blue box).

However, this is increasingly difficult to find, so I’ve resorted to buying doxylamine succinate separately (the ingredient that’s been removed from the newer version of syndol!)

I use Migraleve Pink which contains an anti-emetic, plus Feminax, which are generally good for everything.

If I ‘catch’ my migraine in time I can usually manage it with tablets and carefully timed food and drink (and rest/sleep).

Have relatively recently discovered that frovatriptan, 600mg ibuprofen and metoclopramide do the trick for me. I'm also on propranolol and amitriptyline as prevention which have massively reduced the number that I have.

I've got a cap thing that lives in the freezer which helps too. Or the Kool n Soothe patches if one strikes when I'm at work or something.

Making notes of all of these! Woken this morning and headache has come back, so off to do it all again!

You can get preventative medication, I take pizotifen everyday and it keeps mine at bay.

rolandsrat · 02/11/2025 08:20

I have medication from the GP for mine and while they work for the migraine, the come down off them can be awful. I do find 900mg of aspirin works well.
