How often do you have to repaint your house?

Don’t know if I am just super picky but I moved into a new build a year ago, and I repainted only 6 months ago and already looking like it needs a fresh coat of paint. Going insane! Not painted the skirting boards/doors but the skirting boards are all dinged and marked up, probably having 3 young children because how else do these marks appear?! Are there any good paint recommendations? My skirting boards aren’t glossy not sure what paint is used but it’s clearly only got one coat on

About every eight years?! Certainly not every six months. It's a house, not a museum piece.

I know what you mean, we live in a very old home and the skirting boards are about 10 in high and very subject to getting mysterious dings and marks on them.

My DH used a special paint that resists scuffs and marks and can be washed off easily, and it works too.
I don't think I would ever use any other paint on the walls or boards again.
Higher sheen finishes such as gloss, eggshell and satin are a lot easier to wipe clean than matte finishes.

New builds can need repainting quite quickly as they use cheap paint sometimes plus general settlement of the property /materials absorbing some of the paint etc.

I do think you might be right about builders skimping on paint in new builds.

I really recommend Zinsser paints. Very hardwearing and easy to use. Once you have a good primer, undercoat layer of paint on your woodwork it should last many years.

Do you know the paint he uses?

Yeah I agree with the others, they water down crap paint & dont don't do enough visits, BUT your paint job should last years, not months!!

but quality paint, do enough costs & tge marks should wipe off in future.

I think it was Benjamin Moore, ultra scuff x or something like that?

Lilithcomelightly · 01/11/2025 22:41

I know one thing, it wipes up so easily when with other paints you can scrub away at the grey marks and they don't go anywhere and with this paint, they're gone!
It should decrease the number of times you have to paint OP.

I’d say every 5-10 years depending on the room.

But if I had my way OP and both money and time were no object, I’d happily have the whole lot re-painted every 1-3 years, that would be the dream!

Every 5 years or so for us….we are just decorating out back lounge and the woodwork doesn’t really need doing….we use Valspar satin sheen…..and the scuff resistant Matt for the walls …
