Couch based activities that aren't phone or knitting

I am trying to be on my phone less but I've a shoulder injury which means I can't knit to keep myself busy when watching TV (and to stop myself eating or needing to top up a wine glass too often). What do you do of an evening in similar circs?

Read a kindle? I've got a clicker and remote to turn the page and a stand to put it on so I don't have to use my hands

JudgeBread · 01/11/2025 20:24

Videogames!

They get a bad rap on here but they're fun, engaging and you can basically do anything in them.

I've recently convinced my mam who is a big fan of ghostie TV shows like Uncanny to play Phasmophobia with me and she absolutely loves it! But there's all sorts, I'm a big fan of cosy games where you build little Japanese teashops or furnish your own cute camper van or whatever. But there's so much scope for entertainment and it feels less brain-rotty than just sitting zoned out staring at the TV.

Silverbirchleaf · 01/11/2025 20:27

Adult colouring books are quite therapeutic.

Another vote for kindles and reading.

Dh would love if I had a personaly transplant and wanted to play video games 😄 Actually, I tried a few years ago and I was terrible and he got what we called frustrated so I stopped. Maybe I'll try something solo.

I tend to listen to books rather than paper/kindle. I'll have to see if my concentration holds up!

Jigsaws could be worth a try.

You can generally get a good selection of jigsaws in charity shops OP, at relatively low prices.
So if you do want to give them a go it doesn't have to cost very much.

I sometimes sit and chop vegetables and put them in tubs for the next day. It’s all rock and roll here.

My mother is always trying to foist the old games cupboard shite on me, so I'm sure she'll have some jigsaws buried in there!

I'm definitely I have a word puzzle book somewhere from my last long flight and I know I once bought a sweary unicorn colouring book that I'd forgotten about - will dig them out!

Unfortunately embroidery and crochet are gateway drugs back to knitting and my gammy shoulders are mad at me about it all. It's only been a few days and I'm finding it hard.

Excellent ideas though, thanks all.

There are some really good colouring apps. Like painting by numbers but on the phone. It really helps me to relax

persisted · 01/11/2025 20:46

Sudoku, scrabble online, we have this puzzle game that’s for one person

Current sewing Christmas decorations. I tend to to do cross stitch/ embroidery/ hand sewing small gifts. As you say- stops me from eating. You could start making Christmas/ birthday cards

Doobedobe · 01/11/2025 21:08

Adult colouring books. You can get them from The Works or amazon. Buy a nice box of pencils and gel pens. It is very theraputic.

PermanentTemporary · 01/11/2025 21:09

Needle felting?
I always find logic puzzles preferable to any other puzzle for some reason
Read poetry (try Candlestick Press)

isitmyturn · 01/11/2025 21:23

I don't like console games but I do love a farming game. It's something I go to if I'm unwell and bored. Hayday, Tropic escape there are lots.

The dog is cute but that texture made me feel all weird through my whole body 😬 hope you find something that you can enjoy OP

🥴 😆

I do exercise during the commercials / drink water / try to complete a chore if I'm watching a show on regular tv.
(angel that I am...😇🤣🙄)

HollywentLightly · 01/11/2025 22:22

I do exercise during designated exercise times, walking the dog, running or at the gym. I'm not squatting through Slow Horses 😁

I'll look into needle felting and latch hooking (something I didn't know existed) but I fear they would just annoy me that I'm not knitting.
