What to make for Sunday dinner?

I usually make roast beef or lamb and a nut roast for vegetarians, or beef in Guinness / bean casserole. But I’m bored.

I need something a bit different but still straightforward.

Does anyone have any favourites??

Probably not different enough, but my staples include:
A pork crackling joint
A smoked gammon joint (boil, remove skin, score the fat, press cloves into the centre of each diamond, cover in English mustard and Demerara sugar)
A pie. Any type. I make my own pastry and the kids decorate the top with pastry leaves, flowers and animals. We have an old blackbird who sits in the middle. This is sometimes a leftover meal with chicken from a roast.

Lancashire hotpot
A large side of baked salmon.

Or you can put whole chicken thighs or fillets in a dish with a sauce and back them (eg sour cream and paprika or soy and sesame or harissa)

It depends how much of the communal experience of serving from a shared centrepiece it’s is important to you.

Thank you for your ideas. I’d not thought of a pie.

It’s actually my parents that are coming over. My DC have moved away.

I will have a look at pies. I seem to remember chicken pot pie being a winner.

I’d suggest sausages or a pie.
good quality sausages, gravy.
any tho of potato including roast or mash.
selection of veggies, possible baked beans if people prefer that.

or a lower key ‘roast’ e.g. pork loin chops instead of a joint, or portions of hunters chicken?

I love a roast chicken with lemon, garlic and paprika. Serve with couscous, roasted mediterranean veg topped with crumbled feta and tzatziki on the side.

For something quick and easy we do a chicken traybake in the oven. Chicken thighs, chopped up potatoes and veg all helped along by some chicken stock. So simple and all cooks in one roasting dish.

Toad in the hole?

Lemon Roast chicken with lemon roast potatoes and cumin. Stuff the chicken with garlic and chick peas. Got this recipe from Jamie Oliver and it’s delicious and a favourite in our family. We added cumin because we like it combined with the lemon.

Today we’re having Mediterranean stuffed vegetables. Aubergines, tomatoes, peppers stuffed with mince, rice garlic and herbs. Oven roasted.

Instead of using pastry as a topping, you could use mashed potatoes.

I actually got a turkey out of the freezer and am in the middle of cooking a full on Christmas dinner today! I did it last year for my birthday weekend as it’s my favourite meal, so decided to do it again this year. We usually try to get at least 1 extra turkey in December to freeze that will allow us to have it during the year at some point.

The only difference between today and actual Xmas is I’m not doing a ton of extras for leftovers!

We do similar… our turkey is still in the freezer. We do loads of meals using the leftover turkey. Just got out leg of lamb couple of days to defrost, cook a roast dinner and then looking at recipes. Turkey will be the next to come out… making room for the Christmas meats…
