Where to stop in Wales for lunch

We are travelling home to Cheshire from south wales today. Planning to take the scenic route through wales rather than the M5 as we did on the way here. It’s an hour longer but thought it would be nice to stop off and see a bit more of this beautiful country. I have attached the map of the route we are taking, if anyone has any suggestions of where we can stop off for some sight seeing, a bit of lunch. Hoping this weather cheers up a bit too 🤞

It is all beautiful country on the route you have chosen, various small towns where you can have lunch. Personally I would have come up a bit further east and driven Abergavenny to Hay on Wye, passing Llanthony Priory. It’s a very narrow but scenic road that opens up above Hay into spectacular outlook. You have many options in Hay on Wye for lunch and of course bookshops. There is also food at Llanthony Priory too.. It depends how much time you have available. I think weather forecast is ok for today. Either way, enjoy your trip. I’m sure others will have good suggestions too.

Thanks. I’ll have a look at going that way. I only chose the route I did as that was Apple Maps suggestion.
We have all day really as in no rush to get home.

Powis Castle outside Welshpool was our stop on the same journey but I’m not sure what the opening times are going to be like now it’s the Winter season.

It’s a lovely part of the world. Enjoy the scenery

I was going to say Hay on Wye for a coffee too. It's not that far from your starting point so depends when you leave, but the castle is great and has a smashing coffee shop.

I would also recommend Whittington Castle for lunch. Really easy place to stop and v pleasant.

We wanted to stop at Llangollen but it was absolutely crazy busy so we couldn't park. ended up at Whittington instead which was lovely. Not spectacular just nice and easy and good food.

I would suggest Llangollen - it's beautiful - but there are so many options along that route.

Can you go into Chester? The market has so many good food options.

Is there any way you could go via Elan Valley? We did a similar journey in the summer though going from bearer to Tenby. We stopped at one of the visitor centres and ate there. However there were lots of options of places to eat in the villages around the area.

You may pass the Rhug Estate on that route, I’m not quite sure? That’s a great place to stop.

DD recently drove for an hour just to go there! Smile

My first choice would be via the Elan Valley and stop at the visitor centre for lunch. Hay on Wye and Powis castle are also good options.

I agree Hay on wye/hay bluff are gorgeous, but if you stick with the original route you’ve given then the felin fach griffin would be a fab place to stop for lunch.
