What to do with leftover sweets?

We had very few trick or treaters this year. They started early with the small kids and I thought I was being very smart giving each of them a bar of chocolate and a few sweets. The doorbell rang less than ten times so I am now left with a huge amount of sweets. My DC went out as well (I stayed at home to answer the silent doorbell) and brought home even more.

Someone mentioned donating leftover sweets to a food bank. Would they really take random sweets that don't have a sell by/use by date?

Seems a waste to throw so many into the bin.

Next year I will buy far less and throw handfuls at the first ten kids and turn off the lights!

I’d go through the bag and make up a smaller box of the nicest ones to have at Christmas or use for stockings, and then give the rest to the nearest food larder. Different ones will have different rules but ours would definitely take clearly new sweets the week after Halloween without dates to put out as an extra for the kids.

My local community shop / food bank takes things like this to give away.

So they don't have the big multipack of Haribo but the individual ones will be given out.

Other suggestions, I have in the past given them to the bin men. You can also give them to people who deserve a treat, local A and E or if you have a fire or ambulance station you could donate there.

What are leftover sweets?

I think they are the ones that end up making us sick as we "struggle" to get rid of them in an eco way (i.e. eating them)!🤢

Why did you buy so many when the concept of just eating them over the next few months is so alien to you?

Put them out at Christmas if you don’t eat sweets as a matter of course.

You could use the Roses type ones by baking into brownies.

onwardandupwards · 01/11/2025 06:30

We had loads of left over sweets too so I took them down to the park where the teenagers hang out at night and they were more than happy to take the lot!

ImmortalSnowman · 01/11/2025 06:38

Take them to your local hospital

What are leftover sweets?

It is a mythical concept, a bit like 'leftover' money.

It only exists in Enid Blyton books and members of MLM groups.

I know this is a bit of a weird one but after thinking outside the box I would suggest you and kids eat them with a target to get them finished by Christmas?

🤔

🤣🤣

TheGreenHare · 01/11/2025 07:18

Get some small gift bags and give them alongside an actual gift for the next few parties your kids are invited to!
And eat them yourself. I’m sure you can make a dent in it by Xmas

FigurativelyDying · 01/11/2025 07:46

I think this is a stealth boast. “We eat such a healthy diet, I simply don’t know what to do about “sweets”. (Is that how you pronounce it?) Doesn’t sugar go off after 2 days?”
Seriously, eat them slowly over the next few weeks, when Santa will come and bring more.

Whatshesaid96 · 01/11/2025 08:00

Pass onto the local school PTA. We'd take your arm off as we buy sweets all year round to make or bags or put into hampers

ThatsNotAKnife · 01/11/2025 08:02

You eat them over the next few weeks.

This is why I always buy Halloween treats that I like so I can finish the leftovers.

CrushingOnRubies · 01/11/2025 11:25

keeping some . Sometimes I need a sugar rush

And, taking some into work. Colleagues are gannets and they’ll be gone within a day.

hamsterchump · 01/11/2025 12:50

I really don't get it, just eat them gradually over a number of weeks or months. That's just what we do anyway. I usually have a few chocolates after dinner every day for dessert. Last year we were still eating Cadbury Roses from Christmas in May but I still like them every bit as much as at Christmas and I expect they were still in date (not that it would have stopped me if they weren't, best befores are so much bullshit).

Surely you know someone who would like them? If you're in Cornwall I'll take them.

hamsterchump · 01/11/2025 12:52

If you really don't know anyone then just give them away on facebook marketplace or Olio. They''ll be gone within the hour.

Livpool · 01/11/2025 12:52

Why can’t you just eat them?!

pumpkinscake · 01/11/2025 12:55

I bring them into work, they vanish very quickly

DaveWatts · 01/11/2025 12:56

Have any of your dc (or their friends) have parties coming up? Good for party bags, or donate for school class end of term parties? Have you got a street WhatsApp, a neighbour might be able to use them or take them to work?

InterestedDad37 · 01/11/2025 18:27

I'll 'look after' them for you 😀

YelramBob · 01/11/2025 18:37

I remember a similar post, possibly after Christmas where the OP posted photos of all the leftover chocolates their children had been given. Similar hand-wringing and angst.

It's the same in January when people can't cope with unwanted 'tacky' toiletries sets from MIL 🙄

They don't go off, just eat them gradually.

I wish. I'm trying to lose two stones.
I don't need a huge bag of sugar tempting me.

You've had plenty of good suggestions on here. Giving up sugar is difficult so just bag up the damn sweets and take them to your local hospital.

Don't take them to the park and offer them to children as you may get arrested for that.

PurpleThistle7 · 01/11/2025 22:58

Some of our neighbours give my kids their leftover sweets but in the quantity you seem to have I’d message the local pta and ask if they want them for prizes / Christmas parties. Or drop them off at the local hospital for the staff room.
