Greece, maybe an Island maybe mainland. Went to Greece again recently and loved it. It’s so special, the people are wonderful. I’d happily move there.

Whitby? Don't you find it a bit isolated upthere.?

We inherited one. It just seems like an enormous hassle to me (but DH is attached).

Starboy14 · 29/10/2025 21:15

Lake Garda. Such a beautiful place.

Lake District. We had a family holiday home there for many years and I miss it so much. It was a 3 hour drive, no real hassle, beautiful landscape whatever the season.
I’m no longer keen on flying, we flew to the Caribbean a couple of weeks after 9/11 and it spooked me. I’d always loved flying before that but the massive security checks and having to arrive so early means it’s no longer enjoyable. I suppose most people don’t remember how easy it was before then. We would arrive at the airport 40mns before the flight and it was straight through security and onto the plane.
I like the fact that you can just have a home from home with an easy drive between them. We sold the house when it became difficult to find time to use it, growing family of teenagers with sports and academic commitments made it difficult and we didn’t want to rent it out. Now the children are all adults they would love to have a bolt hole to take friends and we are retired and would be able to divide our time between homes.
It is actually a possibility in the next couple of years although we do have the use of a place in the Yorkshire Dales which is owned by immediate family.
Our original plan was buying a camper van to tour the UK but DH had a stroke and it would mean I’d be doing all the driving.

Hyères peninsula. Or Porquerolles.

macshoto · 29/10/2025 22:04

I don’t think I would. A holiday home is a big tie and means going back to the same place year after year.

I was lucky enough to grow up with one - which worked well for my parents (teachers, with long summer holidays), meaning they could afford a long summer holiday with us.

Now I prefer the greater flexibility that a mix of campervans, hotels, AirBnB etc. can provide. Maybe in future when more adventurous travelling is less appealing (later in retirement), maybe I might change my mind on that.

Lemoncanine · 29/10/2025 22:09

Buckinghamshire! Or Sussex. This is assuming fantasy money… I’d want somewhere I could go all the time…
