Taking my son out of school for 5 days but not sure how to word email

So I know I may get abuse but hey ho. I'll do bullet points, it will be easier
13 year old son who has ADHD was bullied in his old high school since year 7. (5 year old daughter is coming too)
I have moved him to a better school and he is so much happier but still has nightmares.
Been there since 2nd week in September
I am a single parent and we have never been on holiday.
I found a cheap holiday for Turkey and we go on 16th November for 5 days
I'm debating to put this in the email to the new school or shall I just say we are going and thats it. I dont want to be rude and theyve really helped him since hes started there.

I don't plan to take him away again during term time and I know I will get a fine but I think he really needs this and so do I tbh, its been a nightmare few years.

I'd appreciate any advice

It is 7 days not 5. He’ll be out of school for 5. We are going from Sunday to Sunday but looks like I’ve chosen the wrong holiday for us to go on for the first time judging by the comments ☹️

That's not cheap at all, especially for a cold season trip! Why did you book this on a whim without researching, when this is your first holiday as a family? It doesn't really matter how you word the email, the school won't be able to do anything so just say you're going on holiday and be done with it. They won't be impressed that you're taking him out of school when he's just settling in but what can they do?

Bbc weather goes up to the 12th nov and says high of 20, lows of 12. See if they have heated in door pool and if not take wet suit. Make sure you look up what there is to do in the are and pack for the weather.

You chose to go to what is largely a beach destination in November! It can’t be a surprise to you that it’s probably going to be cold and that a lot of what appeals to tourists might be closed, surely? Just a quick google takes you to Tui’s average weather page which gives you the overview of what to expect. Hopefully, you’ve chosen this holiday because you want to do plenty of hiking and sightseeing rather than a sun lounger/swimming break.

id request permission actually, for an authorised absence. Taking holidays out of peak periods can be considered a reasonable adjustment for ND kids. See here: https://supportsendkids.org/question/1694862677835

But the OP has said she’s taking him out then because it’s cheaper.

I assume the advice being given here is to play on the fact her son is ND to try and get it authorised.......

Who have you booked with?

A holiday is what you make it. Personally I would prefer Turkey in November to Turkey in August.

Is it AI?

Hi love.

I booked with Tui. I won’t go into the sob story about why I have never booked a holiday before so it was my first go to take the kids away and according to these comments I have ballsed it up royally.

please note I won’t be playing on his ND to get it authorised I am fully expecting a fine and will pay it

i have booked two excursions and was planning to just chill in and around the hotel for the other days and visit some shops

The weather recommendations have been different all over the net so wasn’t sure. Some say it will be cold and rainy and others say it won’t so I’m baffled

Tbh it'll still be a nice break for you all regardless of weather. A change of scenery, no school, work, housework, cooking so just go and enjoy it!

Being bullied in his previous school and the fact you've never been abroad on holiday don't really mitigate it. I would just say something like..

' We are going on X date and back y date. Apologies for any inconvenience and if it's possible to take work for the days he misses that would be much appreciated. I understand this isn't the norm and will be a one off. If you need to discuss it further please do contact me.'

That should do it.

Don’t ask for work on top of taking your child out for a term time holiday, that’s cheeky fucker territory.it’s saying “ please put yourselves out and give the teachers additional work while we sun ourselves “.
Normally I’d say a week out of school is not terrible, but if your son has only been at the school for less than half a term, it may well affect him socially to disappear for a week when he is trying to establish himself with a group of kids who all know each other better and for longer than him.
If you really think the term time holiday is necessary, could you arrange it for later on in the academic year, when he’s more likely to be settled?

Dear school, child will be absent from x date to x date due to a family holiday,
Best wishes,
Me.

Just do this one.

Don’t ask for extra work. It takes time for the teacher to sort it out and nobody ever actually does it.

FightingInAVatOfJellyBabies · 30/10/2025 08:51

It will be great - the pools might be too cold but the sea will be warmer.

Take jeans/hoody/coat for the evenings as it will be chilly, but many places have outside heaters.

Take a wetsuit 🤣🤣

Do you actually think the OP wants to spend hundreds on wetsuits for the three of them when she’s obviously prioritising saving money?

Now is a good time to second hand wet suits. Short kids ones often sell for about £10 each.

Rituelec · 30/10/2025 12:36

We just got winter wetsuits in Cornwall for a tenner each end of season sales. Kids spent every day in the sea!

Is it really a good deal once you add school fines on for two children?

5 year old highly unlikely to be fined, in our LA at least.

OP I’d just say ‘DS will be away 16-21 November’ and then elaborate if asked. That’s life OP, enjoy your holiday!

Just say you are not too bothered about education so you are taking him on holiday
