I am 63 soon to be 64 and have been working in the same place/role for 23 years.
Twice recently it has been said to me " but Timeslip- you are old" this is by my bosses. I am the second oldest in my workplace.
This week l was approached and asked when l decide to leave can l give them plenty of time to appoint a replacement.
l have never mentioned retirement or my age- and l have no current intention of retiring given that the retirement age is 67.
I have no idea where this is coming from and it is getting me a bit unsettled and upset. I did get a pay rise after a performance review in May so l do think that is the issue.
Any suggestions on what is going on and how to l handle these comments.

Remind your boss that the Equality Act covers age discrimination. The retirement age for you is 67 so it will be a while yet before they need to replace you.

I'm sorry you are being treated in this way and it absolutely isn't ok! As another user posted, I would tell your boss the repeated conversation about your age/expectations of retirement are making you uncomfortable so they need to stop. There is no compulsory retirement age so it is really up to you as to when you might stop working. I'd be asking them to review your pay given you haven't had an increase in a while too.

Have HR remind them that the Equality Act covers age discrimination, and that pissing you off with their ageism could get way more expensive than your pay rise.

Thanks
Unfortunately there is no HR as it is a small professional business ( one of the offenders deals with HR matters) but l am covered by a good union.
Perhaps l should give them a call,
