Anyone else constantly dream of leaving a regular job to start a business?

I keep thinking about this but not sure I actually have any skills.
Like many people I dream of running a cafe or coffee shop, maybe combined with a gift shop or something well-being related.
its a pipe dream I know, I need to earn a living and most businesses aren’t successful.
But then I think, some people do it…. And make a success of it.

Yep….theres a building opposite my bus top, been vacant for about 2 years and I always stare at thinking what business I can host….most recent thoughts would be a mac and cheese bar. I don’t even like mac and cheese but I know it’s a firm fave of most people and so a good business opportunity, only way I’d be able to do this is if I came into some money.

No, I like my job, earn a decent wage, get generous holiday leave, a good amount paid dependants leave (15 days per year of which I’ve used 7 days in 4 years but nice to know it’s there!), a 35 hour working week, generous expenses if I ever have to work away and my own time is exactly that. Plus my pension is really good.
I’m not especially ambitious or creative so being a paid employee suits me down to the ground.
Fair play to anyone who gets a business up and running, dh did it 20 years ago and is so happy doing what he does. It was hard at the beginning for so many reasons but he wasn’t built to be an employee!

Im in a badly paid job I no longer enjoy. Im not qualified to do anything and its difficult to find another job that I'm likely to enjoy any more than my current role.

@Alavanille I’m a dog walker primarily but also do house sitting, cat/small animal visits and equestrian and farm care as well.

Can I ask if a good monthly salary is earned doing this please? Im the main wage earner in my home and would love to be able to afford to do something like this. Thanks

I’m a freelancer but am currently overwhelmed by wanting to jack it in and build and run a gaming cafe. Mainly for geeky awkward teens like mine who don’t play football and for who there’s nothing to do in our small town. A few local cafes have shut down recently but others are thriving and busy and I imagine it’s just that there’s only so many our town can sustain.

cane up with the gaming cafe idea as they seem very popular and it’s offering something that doesn’t currently exist. Was thinking hours could be 3-10pm so you get the after school/college crowd but then also somewhere you can buy coffee after 5pm and a place to go to in the evening that isn’t just the pub.

DS and I have been visiting various board game cafes and come up with the dream scenario but the thought of pulling together a business plan and the actual admin is a bit terrifying - even though there are a couple of seemingly perfect locations in our town.

DH has been out of work since March and I never thought my precarious freelance wage could carry us but so far we’ve managed so there is def a world in which either he can set this up and I carry on my job or when he gets a PAYE job again I can give up my freelance career to set it up, as it turns out we can live on less than we have been (getting teens through uni is another issue though)

im thinking a relatively simple set up but make it somewhere people want to stay for a few hours, pay per table per hour and have excellent coffee, locally baked goods, trying to think of very simple hand held food we could provide (maybe it’s just sandwiches and crisps to be honest but if people can eat they’ll stay longer). We’re looking at having a seperate room for D&D campaigns, running event nights like chess, Capture the Red Tower, War Hammer etc and possibly another small room that’s console based and costs more per hour to book out. Potential for parties (teens and adults alike!) and because these spaces tend to be very welcoming to all it would def provide something not currently available in our town (which is lovely but quiet and after 5pm there are only the pubs or out for a full meal)…..I was thinking we could get an alcohol licence but maybe just charge corkage because again I know so many adults who want to be able to go out but don’t drink so market town pubs aren’t the greatest places to hang out in the evenings….
