Is it ok to use all the PIP for travel?

It can be used for anything can’t it?

chatting to a friend today about PIP as both our dc get it and I mentioned how we spend it all on travel (taxis) and she seemed shocked saying it’s not meant just for that ?

Of course it is. Everyone s needs will be different. What your dc needs is taxis.

TigerRag · 27/10/2025 17:16

It's whatever makes yours and DCs lives easier

I have weeks where I need to use both components for care or mobility

TheFairyCaravan · 27/10/2025 17:17

Why are there so many threads about what disability benefits should be spent on all of a sudden?

MrsTerryPratchett · 27/10/2025 17:26

As long as your children’s needs are met, just like child support, it’s no one’s business.

Once the money is in your hand, it’s yours to use. I can’t stand people policing other people’s spending when they’re never do it if it wasn’t benefits or CS.

MrsBennetsPoorNervesAreBack · 27/10/2025 17:27

Presumably you spend it on taxis because that helps your child to get out and about. Sounds like a perfectly good use of PIP to me.

Needmorelego · 27/10/2025 17:29

If we didn't use my daughters PIP towards transport (Uber mostly) we would be trapped at home.
It's exactly what (along with other things) PIP is for.

Mischance · 27/10/2025 17:30

It is intended to redress any disadvantages that arise because of disability - if that's travel for your DC then that is fine. It is exactly the sort of thing it is for.

Tell your friend to pop over the horizon!

AliceTheCamelHasTheHumpSoGoAliceGoBomBomBom · 27/10/2025 17:31

I spend some of dds on first class train travel as well as taxis.

Spend it on whatever you need

purpleygrey · 27/10/2025 17:46

Spend it on what you need.

one of the school mums spends her DCs PIP on the pub, and is incredibly open about it as being a reward for her difficult life. She’s a twat but that’s besides the point. No one is checking what it’s going on.

TheSpiritofDarkandLonelyWater · 27/10/2025 17:47

I use my PIP for taxis. You can use it for what you want.

Arlanymor · 27/10/2025 17:47

Spend it on what your child needs. It's no one else's business in the same way that whether you buy white bread or brown bread is no one else's business.

badstrict · 27/10/2025 18:19

It’s not her business, your DC must be adults though, or very nearly. Are they happy with this?

Piptravel · 27/10/2025 18:24

She was saying it’s not ok to only use for travel that we should be doing a work access travel application (never heard of this ?)

Your friend isn't a friend, and clearly has no idea what she's talking about! I have a friend who gets PIP for her child and she uses it to get their food shops delivered. Her child struggles in supermarkets, she gets no respite and ordering from shops online is more expensive than lidl or aldi so it works for her. Some people use it for sensory items, clothes, respite care, days out, etc. As long as you're not buying designer handbags while your child goes without, crack on!

RandomMess · 27/10/2025 18:27

If they are working you can see what other funding they could be eligible for through the Access to Work fund.

Arlanymor · 27/10/2025 18:27

If either of your children are working (sorry I assumed when you said DC that they were younger for some reason) you can check if they meet the criteria for access to work: https://www.gov.uk/access-to-work/apply

Access to Work: get support if you have a disability or health condition

Get help at work, including an Access to Work grant, if you have a disability or health condition - eligibility, how to apply.

https://www.gov.uk/access-to-work/apply

whatisforteamum · 27/10/2025 18:28

Pip travel I've applied for access to work.
It's taxis and travel to work through DWP.

youalright · 27/10/2025 18:29

The majority of mine is spent on taxis as my consultants and treatment is the otherside of the country costs an absolute fortune i wouldn't be able to afford my treatment without

RandomMess · 27/10/2025 18:30

Oh good I can’t post links on this site anymore!

Piptravel · 27/10/2025 18:34

It’s used for appointments and any trips out as I don’t drive and public transport not an option and also to get to and from PT job , I have to accompany dd as she won’t go out alone. I’ll look into the access to work thing

I know someone that gets pip for agoraphobia, migraines and anxiety.
She uses hers for travel when she has to go out appointments etc as she wont go on the bus train etc.
Also uses it towards privet treatment for migraines and anxiety treatment.
It all goes towards her needs.
She is really trying to help her self.

I also knew someone that got high rate pip and uses it for holidays days out fancy things nails hair spa treatments ect.
I do think its a piss take when its for the childs needs but i dont see anything wrong with said child.
Said child problems talking and sen however child talks and acts like any other 9 year old.
The mum said her acting skills when they have appointments are worth an oscar.
I no longer see this person.
