Scary movies

So the spooky season is upon us.
What's the scariest films you've ever watched?
We are hosting a Halloween party on Friday - an early tea party, then T or T for an hour so.
Then the plan is to come back here for a spooky film night.
There'll be a room for the little kids to watch their suitably scary films and another for the older teenagers.
The adults will be joining the older kids once the little ones have left or gone to bed.
What would be on your list to watch?

Host, Sinister, The Conjuring, The Blair Witch Project (original or remake both good), Grave Encounters, Ouija: Origin of Evil, Hell House, Haunt, Terrifier, The Ring.
Nothing too highbrow, lots of jump scares and good fun

HorrorAndHaagenDazs · 27/10/2025 13:48

Eden Lake - horrific
The Substance - utterly brilliant but horrific
Sinister

And The Elixir on Netflix which is a really great zombie flick from indonesia that i discovered this weekend.

HorrorAndHaagenDazs · 27/10/2025 13:51

Host (2020) is great too. Was on iplayer now on prime for a fiver.

I love horror films but they don’t really scare me.

My favourite is The Descent, The real horror in that is the shocking betrayal. For a pure fun horror film try DogSoldiers. 30 Days of night is a decent watch, one scene is very inventive from above, if it’s been watched then it will be obvious. The Thing and Scream have two of the best opening scenes of any horror film. For something quite endearing try Warm Bodies.

The one film that freaked me out is The Road, it’s not classed as horror it’s a post apocalyptic nightmare drama.

CharliesAngles · 27/10/2025 16:52

Thanks all.
The teens will probably choose but the adults want a classic horror movie (I'll be watching from behind a cushion, or join the younger kids 🙈)

The scariest lately was hereditary. That scared the bejesus out of me.

Easy ones to watch that aren’t too frightening, are the conjuring and insidious films.

I have heard that weapons is very good

ViciousCurrentBun · 27/10/2025 17:28

@tryingtobesogood Hereditary comes out in polls often as one of the scariest. I did find it peculiar though not frightening. It’s worth a watch for sure. A good film that I enjoyed is called Shutter, it doesn’t do well in polls. One of the best horror things that I loved was Sea of Souls it was a BBC drama and a very specific episode. That was all about being haunted by guilt and denial, very clever.

ViciousCurrentBun · 27/10/2025 17:30

Scream is currently on Netflix, that would be a decent choice.

Danioyellow · 27/10/2025 17:31

Bring her back. Talk to me. Descent

SmugglersHaunt · 27/10/2025 17:51

Kill List for proper horrible scares.
To the Devil a Daughter if you want to feel like you’ve taken slow-release, fear-laced LSD
Witchfinder General - gruesome and scary
Audition - just horrible

magpie234 · 27/10/2025 17:52

I plan to watch The Others as have never seen it!

TheLizardQueen · 27/10/2025 17:53

Haunt scares the living daylights of me, to the point where I refuse to watch it again. It was very good though!!

LadyDarcy80s · 27/10/2025 18:14

The Exorcism of Emily Rose
The Excorsist
The Hills Have Eyes

Upstartled · 27/10/2025 18:16

It had no right being as scary as it was because it was only a 15, but The Woman is Black really got under my skin and then As Above, So Below. Maybe I'm a wimp?

Never heard of this, just watched the trailer and it looks good.

Upstartled · 27/10/2025 18:44

I think Dog Soldiers above is a good shout for your set up, op. It's gruesome but good sport, it's not very cerebral so people won't be lost when the inevitable gobby one in your group gets bored and starts chatting through it.

CharliesAngles · 27/10/2025 18:53

Thanks @Upstartled
There are plenty of gobby ones in our group for sure 😆
Might start with the classic 'Halloween', just to set the mood.

Another vote for The Descent (2005). It is absolutely brilliant, has a proper storyline but is also terrifying in parts.
Barbarian (on Netflix) is also excellent.

RebeccaDecember · 27/10/2025 19:12

Lots of good suggestions on here.. would add..

Recent Scary - It Follows
Classic Scary - the original Nightmare on Elm
Street.

Let us know what you end up watching!

YourTruthorMine · 27/10/2025 19:45

The Shining for sure, if you're looking for really scary, or Dog Soldiers if you want lighthearted scary.

I absolutely loved Haunt, scary but great fun to watch. I don’t know anyone else that’s seen it, feel like it went under the radar.

Overthemhills · 27/10/2025 20:41

Martyrs - if you really want to disturb yourself!
Pet Cemetery (also v disturbing)
Sinister (it truly freaked me out for some reason)
Weapons is good - a bit of a thinker though you wouldn’t necessarily think it while watching it. It definitely stayed with me.
Speak No Evil was fun in a way (not really horror tbh) but great performance from James McEvoy - I haven’t seen the original but bet it was way more scary.
Salem’s Lot.

WilmaDickshow · 28/10/2025 08:06

The Orphanage is excellent.

Great choice! Is such a good film - one of my favourites!
