Does the conduct of a musician / singer put you off listening to their music?

The other day I was listening to a compilation on apple music and a Michael Jackson song started playing.

I love his music, there is no denying his talent.

I do believe he abused children (and the point of this thread is not whether he did or didn’t) however I hadn’t expected the visceral reaction I had to hearing a song I had previously loved. I had to turn it off because all I could see was those little boys.

There are others who have been found guilty of abuse - R Kelly for example.
I had never liked his music anyway but wonder if those who did have found themselves equally unable to listen to it anymore.

In what way? I haven’t heard this

Supporting the For Britain far-right party, which was an anti-Muslim UKIP splinter group also supported by Tommy Robinson. They were too far right even for the UKIPpers, who thought they were Nazis.

Also racist remarks eg referring to Chinese people as a sub-species.

I loved the Smiths so much and thought Morrissey was a genius (used to joke with DH ‘only Morrissey understands’). But I never listen to them now.

It's weird about MJ. I somehow am not repulsed when I hear his music. Not like I would be for Gary Glitter. I wouldn't listen to Lost prophets but I don't think I'd recognise their songs to have a revulsion to.

I guess I grew up with Jacko and it's almost like I never saw him as a human being.

Like normal rules don't apply. Or you knew he was a wrong un from the start kind of thing. I can't really explain it.

I certainly despise him as a person. But the reaction to his music is kind of the same as it's always been.

Dogaredabomb · 27/10/2025 09:25

John Lennon, I don't want to listen to his peace and love after how badly he treated Julian. I think he's just a nasty hypocrite.

I’m not consistent.

Remix to Ignition is an undeniable banger.

Would I listen to Lost Prophets? No.

YumYa · 27/10/2025 09:27

@noonames well I never. I'll have a Google. He couldn't be more wrong about Chinese people the idiot. Not that he should say it about anyone. How bizarre.

dizzydizzydizzy · 27/10/2025 09:28

No it doesn't put me off but I am judging myself for feeling that way! IABU.

Morrissey broke my heart when he showed his true colours. I don't listen to his music now.

So many times after seeing an icon in an interview I think 'oh, he's an idiot'. I think they should keep the mystique, like Kate Moss.

Puppalicious · 27/10/2025 09:47

I like quite a bit of Kanye West’s early stuff (and Runaway is one of my favourite songs) but feeel a bit weird any time I put it on. Hasn’t quite stopped me listening to it though

PearlClutzsche · 27/10/2025 10:08

Same with me and Morrissey/The Smiths.

I've also gone off HP Lovecraft's work. He was an enormous racist (though probably not uncommon for people writing 100 years ago... and he actually hated pretty much everyone - except academic, young, white men from the east coast of the USA!)

The Smiths were ruined for me when Morrissey turned out to be an arsehole 😔

That's the hardest one for me. They are a great band though and more than Mozza. He has never reached those heights without Marr ,Rourke and Joyce.

There's always covers I guess.

BlackberrySmaug · 27/10/2025 10:56

Yes, definitely. I would never listen to Lost Prophets, R Kelly, P Diddy etc. now, knowing what I know about them. It's not just that it's actively giving them money in most cases, it's also just that I can't not think about the things they did when I hear their music, and I don't want those ideas in my head.

LarryIsMyRomanEmpire · 27/10/2025 10:59

I'd have loved to see The divine comedy live, but no way because of how Neil Hannon treated Glinner

have you got links for those accusations?

GanninHyem · 27/10/2025 11:04

Yeah Lost Prophets for me too. Their first album was absolutely incredible. I feel sorry for the band but I just feel icky listening too them.

I'm surprised people haven't heard about Mozzas arseholery tbh, he's more popular for that than his music now surely.

Thundertoast · 27/10/2025 11:15

Aerosmith and Red Hot Chilli Peppers here. Not many people know about Steven Tyler and Anthony Kiedis compared to MJ so it always provokes interesting conversation if ever it comes up. A

Oh I’m sure you can find some, various controversial incidents have been widely reported. He wore a For Britain badge for an appearance on a talk show and I think the racism about China was to do with food iirc. Let me know if that doesn’t help.

noonames · 27/10/2025 11:17

Oh there you go, someone’s kindly posted some articles for you 👍

he is the smiths !!

EleanorReally · 27/10/2025 11:29

what did john lennon do to julian?

lobsterkiller · 27/10/2025 11:30

I struggle with all mentioned above, for me though I can't listen to John Lennon and he has tainted The Beatles. He preached about peace and love whilst treating both his wives and eldest son like absolute shit. A nasty, bitter man.
