How to curl teen DS' hair?!

He has a fairly short haircut but longer on top and falling down over his forehead. He had lovely round curls when he was mid-childhood age and wants curls on top again. I'm not sure if it's hormones/ more oil in his hair (he washes it nightly) but it is falling quite flat. I have tried mousse and gel, scrunching it, diffuser, still no curls. Is there anything else he can try?! These are the kind of urgent teen problems he presents to me in expectation of a solution so thanks in advance!

My 15 year old ds had a perm! I wasn't thrilled at the idea, but it looks really good, and has lasted ages!

Wow thank you! I had forgotten that perms even existed!! Did he get it done in a salon?

My DS has a perm too. His hair is totally straight so his loose perm gives him the chance for a bit of texture on top. He has it at a unisex salon nearby

Loads of boys having perms on top now

Puffclouds · 27/10/2025 09:16

Thank you all! This is a revelation. I will try to find somewhere local that does it, perms seem to be out of fashion and not offered in many places now.

He got it done from a friend's mum who is a hairdresser. She did have to do it twice for him as the first time as he has very straight hair she didn't do the curls tight enough with a small enough roller. Luckily she was happy to re do with tighter curls and that's lasted ages.

He could use rags to curl overnight, you can get quite tight curls, depending on how big they are.

The alpaca look is very popular with teen boys and I think most are having perms

Alpaca 🤣🤣🤣

I’ve heard it called broccoli hair on here and teen ds agrees that it’s a good metaphor. He’s got super straight and flat hair and uses sea salt spray to make his hair worthy of going out (create texture) His barber shows him some tricks when he goes.

soontobeamama · 27/10/2025 13:19

It’s quite trendy these days for boys to get perms on top and shaved at the sides.

WonderfulSmith · 27/10/2025 13:23

All the teen boys the days are getting broccoli head perms. I was talking to my hair dresser about it the other day. She said she’d not done a perm years and then she suddenly had all these young lads wanting them.

clawmachine · 27/10/2025 13:28

He could try a curl activator cream, if it was curly previously it might help the curls come back

ElizabethVonArnim · 27/10/2025 16:50

Last time I was in the hairdresser, there were two teen boys in there having perms. I think it might be more common than you think.

DiscoBob · 27/10/2025 16:56

Young lads and perms are a big thing for the last few years. Funny as it sounds. I do think it actually looks quite cute curly on the top and short at the sides.

Ohmygodthepain · 27/10/2025 17:25

My hair was poker straight as a kid, went curly at puberty, deffo hormones.

Perm it!
