Silent migraine and high blood pressure

I’m 41 years old. I have had high blood pressure for a year which is not yet controlled by medication. I’m on blood pressure medication but still waiting for it to be increased.

On Tuesday I experienced vision loss in one eye with flashes for around half an hour. I presumed it was migraine without headache (I did have migraine as a teenager, but with accompanying headache), so did nothing about it at the time. But now I’m overthinking it and wondering if it’s related to the high blood pressure.
No other symptoms at the time other than urgency to use the toilet.
Im just wondering if I should have consulted a doctor at the time? I realise it’s a bit late now!

You need to go backk to the GP for more meds for your blood pessure... What is the reason you are waiting for?

GingerbreadSmile · 26/10/2025 04:00

The GP wanted blood tests before increasing the meds, which I had a month ago. Not received any communication following the blood test, so must have been fine. I was told I’d receive a message with a future appointment following the blood test, but didn’t.

I know I should have chased this up myself. Been such a stressful time at work recently due to being short staffed and extra responsibilities to cover the low staff levels, which is no excuse, but is the reason for the delay on my part. I’ve really not had the headspace to think about calling for an appointment. Stupid I know.

I will be ringing and making a GP appointment on Monday.

You should be able to see your results on your NHS app. If you don’t fully understand, copy over to Chat GPT and ask it to explain…..

My nhs app says that I need to ask my GP for access. I’m pretty sure my blood tests were fine or I’d have been contacted.

Do you have a BP machine at home? They are quite cheap from Amazon etc, - maybe get one, then you can check if you have another migraine.

I've had the silent migraine thing before but associate it more with lack of sleep and too much computer screen time. It goes away after being in a dark room for a bit - but yeah, it is unnerving.

And yes to chasing up GP appointment.

GingerbreadSmile · 26/10/2025 04:33

Yes I do have a blood pressure machine but didn’t use it at the time of the ‘aura’ in case it increased anxiety. Not took my BP for a while actually due the associated anxiety!

i hadn’t had a lack of sleep. But I have been feeling stressed over the last couple of months which could be a migraine trigger.

Just took my BP seeing as I can’t sleep.
It’s 121 over 104 which is much lower than it was a few weeks ago! So maybe the medication has started to have an affect

Was very probably just a silent migraine that I had earlier in the week, seeing as I had classic migraines as a teen!

Are you due your period? I used to get ocular migraines when I was due to start.

I used to get them in my early 20's too. Then they eased off. Then came back again in my 40's. GP and optician both said they were caused by hormone fluctuations (and not a marker for anything sinister).

Deffo chase up your blood test results - if only for peace of mind.

Get your BP sorted though - that's probably a separate issue and not connected to the migraines, particularly if you're stressed.
