Does anyone still do Guy Fawkes Night

When I was a child it was a big thing. We made a guy. A huge bonfire was built on the village green. Everyone would walk through the village with torches singing some song pushing their guys which would be admired by all.

Mother would make cinder toffee, toffee apples, cake. These would be donated to stalls. There'd be hot and cold drinks made. We all had sparklers.

There'd be a few good men and women who'd set up the fireworks a distance away. Very tame by today's standards but magical to us children.

They'd light this enormous to us bonfire, we'd run around the green. Playing in the cold , it was a highlight.

Today's enormous displays aren't nearly as much fun imo

I've only ever been to the ones you describe, which still happen every year in every village round us. Though it's usually on the football field rather than 'the village green'.

I'm not sure what other type there is.

Remember, remember the 5th of November,
The Gunpowder Treason and Plot,
I see no reason
Why the Gunpowder Treason
Should ever be forgot.
Guy Fawkes, Guy Fawkes, 'twas his intent
To blow up the King and the Parliament.
Three score barrels of powder below
To prove old England's overthrow.
By God's providence he was catch'd
With a dark lantern and burning match.
Holla boys, Holla boys, let the bells ring.

I went to a convent school where we were taught Guy Fawkes was framed for being catholic. So my mum didnt let us join in. My kids take part now though.

I never thought of it from that viewpoint.

MIL does fireworks in her garden. DH lights them. We have tomato soup, frankfurters, cheese and ginger cake afterwards. DS much prefers that to public displays.

I’m not going this year as we have a new cat and I don’t know how she’ll react to bonfire night. I’ll miss it.

I just don't enjoy big displays, too noisy. I do marvel at the drone displays though.

I just miss the bonfire, darkness, toffee, cocoa and camaraderie.

I love Guy Fawkes, also my childhood tradition. Big bonfire, stuffed guy, food and fun. Occasionally sparklers. I didnt mind also the local organised firework displays. I am south east born and bred, moved back here as an adult. What we now have to put up with is large firework displays, crass individuals any day or time, and Halloween. GFG Halloween - americanised. Posters from other parts of the UK write on here delightfully about their guising traditions. They sound lovely, but so similar to my guy Fawkes. But why can't they accept from me that Halloween is a crappy, sweet grabbing, American tradition, and then they try to diss Guy Fawkes. I miss my guy fawkes!

Chewbecca · 25/10/2025 21:37

Yes, we do a little. Fireworks, sparklers, sausages, toffee. With our DC and GC.

For me it is a much more British tradition than Halloween and it's a shame the two have switched position in the pecking order!

Chewbecca · 25/10/2025 21:38

Also remember making a Guy as a kid and sitting outside the corner shop with him calling 'penny for the guy'. It was fun!
