Is it worth spending more on hair straighteners

My hair straighteners must be 10yrs old and have given up on me. Looking at replacements on Amazon for speed of delivery, and getting bamboozled by the range of features and prices. Negative ions. Infused with Moroccan oil. All different brands, £20-200. What do I really need? Is it best to go for a name I've heard of or does it make no odds? I've got long thick straight hair, mainly use them for smoothing.

I personally don’t think the expensive ones are any different. I bought some wide ones for my daughter from Amazon last Christmas and they work well. Cost about £30. She also has very long, thick straight hair.

I’ve just bought Remington shine therapy. Got them for £25 in the Amazon prime sales and they are the best straighteners I have ever owned. They are significantly better than my ghds.

Great reviews actually I may go for these, thanks!

I got some Remingtons on Amazon for £20-£25 whilst my ghds were getting repaired. They actually replaced my ghds for a brand new pair and honestly the effect was the same from the Remingtons.

Ihaterain1 · 25/10/2025 15:26

I have remington shine therapy too, bought a few months ago from Boots, usually on offer.

Hazlenuts2016 · 25/10/2025 15:34

I switched to babyliss during the pandemic after decades of GHDs. Never looked back.

YorkshireFelix · 25/10/2025 15:35

Another vote for the Remington shine therapy. I have had mine for a few years now and they are great. Will replace with the same ones when it comes to it!

NewEnglandWeekend · 25/10/2025 15:35

I got Cloud9s after years of cheap straighteners. They are a revelation.

Andregroup · 25/10/2025 15:37

When my GHDs gave up about three years ago, I bought a pair for about £20 from Boots - either Remington or Babyliss, can't remember. They're fine. No difference between them and the GHDs really.

TeaMeBasil · 25/10/2025 15:43

I have GHDs and do think they make a difference, especially with thick long wavy hair. When I’ve used cheaper brands, they do straighten, sure - just not as smoothly or quickly and the straight hair doesn’t last so long. Worth the extra cost for me, my last pair lasted 20 years!

Yellowsubmarine55 · 25/10/2025 15:58

I straighten every day and have never bought ones like ghd or cloud 9. Remington usually have a mid- high end version and they are still over half the price of the big brand ones.

Didntask · 25/10/2025 16:00

Another vote for Remington Shine Therapy. Far better than my GHDs.

Spooky2000 · 25/10/2025 16:55

One of the things I would recommend is looking for 'cool tip' because I've lost count of the amount of times I've burnt myself trying to do my hair and holding the end of the straighteners :(

Growlybear83 · 25/10/2025 16:57

I bought some GHDs three years ago after years of using cheap straighteners. I don’t think there is any difference at all, except my GHDs are a very pretty shade of purple.

FieldOfBeans · 25/10/2025 17:43

I also have Remington Shine Therapy! Best straighteners I’ve ever used for about £40.

Autumnlife · 25/10/2025 21:05

I’ve got cloud9s for home and my travel ones are the Remington shine ones and both are fantastic but I prefer the cloud 9s .
