After being in a medically induced coma due to trying to take their life?

Completely depends on how they are once physically recovered and able to leave hospital. Obviously I’d expect an assessment to be done. But I’d assume the experience of a failed attempt could be pretty transformative so I wouldn’t expect it to be a given.

No. I wouldn’t expect it.

The threshold for inpatient stay is high and they would assess the state of mind.
For example, I have been sectioned a few times. But my husband requested admission for me one time as he found my pill stash and I was assessed and they said I had capacity to make my own decisions.
I currently see angels who tell me to do awful things. I’ve told my MH team I am a danger to myself and family. The MH won’t visit me at home as I’m classed a danger but I am told I don’t meet the threshold for hospital.
Its a very strange system.

NHS here. The ITU/ relevant inpatient care team team and the hospital's mental health liaison team will work together to assess and decide next steps. They will also liaise with family and discuss with patient

As @ninjahamster has said meeting an admissions threshold is honestly very arbitrarily applied. It also depends on bed availability. Admission is possible but by no means a given.

I wouldn’t expect it as a matter of course, there are far too many variables involved. Also sometimes the person isn’t a risk anymore after an attempt as it can serve as enough to make them realise that’s not the way.

ChocHotolate · 24/10/2025 19:43

Not necessarily. I assume that if the attempt on their life was serious enough to end up on ITU then there would be quite a long time before they are well enough to be medically discharged. A lot can change in someone’s state of mind in that time
