Classic Period Dramas

I'm going through a bit of a phase of watching period dramas - ideally book adaptations...
I love Dickens, Hardy - a bit of Austen.
What are you favourites?

I have loved The Mayor of Casterbridge, Little Dorrit, Great Expectations etc
I wondered if you had any more classic drama adaptations to suggest? I've been looking for the old Tom Jones but it's only paid for on Prime 😟

I have searched endlessly for Joanna Trollope’s adaptions and have only found ‘The Choir’ on YouTube.

If anyone can point me in the right direction I would be grateful.

I was referring to the Victorian Anthony Trollope’s novels, not Joanna’s, though I believe she is a descendant of his.

Gah! Apologies! How stupid of me.

Not at all - I hadn’t specified which Trollope.

Just finished watching Penmarric from 1979 - found it in a charity shop for £2 and worth every penny!

From the same era: The Mill on the Floss mini series was very good.

Thanks to this thread, I found Little Dorrit and I bloody loved it!

Which version of Bleak House are people recommending?

TressiliansStone · 08/01/2026 23:36

I adore the 2005 version with Anna Maxwell Martin and Denis Lawson, but also remember the 1985 version with Denholm Elliot as being a very fine thing.

Wikipedia tells me that the 1985 version omits the Caddy Jellyby subplot, so for that reason I would prioritise the 2005.

Denholm Elliot makes anything worth watching.

He does! Grin
