Misophonia support

Hello, just wondering if anyone else here has misophonia to the point its adversely affecting their life.

This is no longer just (don't like noise) but actually is making me feel ill.

I have a nice little bite mark on my hand (I didn't even realise I'd done it) because I just can't handle my colleagues slow, long slurp of her morning tea.

Fuck this!

Does anyone know if the ear plugs actually work?

(Please don't suggest counselling, I can't afford private and i work for mental health services-i know i have zero chance of getting seen for this!)

I don't have misophonia but I do have sensitive ears to noise and found Loop earplugs very helpful and comfortable, alternatively could you wear noise-cancelling headphones at work?

@ToastedAlmond Thank you, I'll have a look.
Unfortunately not. A lot of my job involves speaking to members of the public/colleagues plus I'm on the phone a lot. So noise cancelling headphones wouldn't work (especially if I could still hear a tiny bit of noise as that makes me worse!)

Could you sit away from her or rejig your work load so you're not near her when she's slurping? Some places of work don't allow drinks near computer desks or work stations...maybe enforce the rule? It will make you unpopular to raise this though 😅😅😅

We don't even have a staff room. All food and drink is only consumed at desks. I ran away to the printer and started to do some busy work 🤣.

Fellow sufferer here!

I can't stand people humming amongst other noises, but it is tones of voices that I am struggling, the older I get, to cope with. I go to meetings every week about an interest I have and sometimes am internally screaming if the speaker has a voice I can't stand. If I can't leave, then by the end I am so stressed I don't know what to do.

Sorry, I have not found anything that help, but can definitely understand the slurping noise making your head spin

@5678XXX it's so hard isn't it?
My triggers are definitely food noise (slurping, chewing, swallowing) and also overlapping noises. I get sweaty, panicky, etc. I've actually drawn blood from digging my nails into my hand 🙈

This! I 100% get this! It's horrific!

It is awful, I didn't know there was a name for it until a couple of years ago. I just thought it was "me".

I also get irrationally angry with some smells - especially burnt toast. Have had that for years. My kids just thought I was being grumpy and picky, but it is like I have prickles going to the back of my neck and shoulders when I smell it and almost like an electrical surge.

HesarealJacquelineHigh · 24/10/2025 10:15

I also have this, and I really feel for you as it's awful. I feel like it's one of those things where unless you have it you just can't understand how horrible it is and how much it can affect you. One of my colleagues eats crisps so loudly at her desk that I can actually feel myself getting hot and stressed when she's eating because I hate it so much. Another colleague whistles out of tune alllll the time too. I haven't tried the earplugs but would be interested to know if people do think they work or not

Oh I'm so glad I've found my people!

Yes, I'd definitely love to hear from anyone who has used to earplugs for this reason.
