The King and the Pope..

I never feel remotely sorry for members of the Royal Family but of all the times for the King to have had this rapprochement with the Pope, this must have been the worst. It’s absolutely fascinating and significant historically, but presumably for most people it’s not significant enough to be any sort of distraction from the general shit show. And the News providers have too much other royal stuff on at the moment to focus on it.

Yes as pp said they are praying to the same God so no need for anyone to get upset about it. By the way do the Church of England say the Hail Mary? As I was brought up Catholic that was always a very important prayer.

Not in most congregations, although I believe some Anglo-Catholics do. my understanding is generally the Church of England doesn’t put anywhere near the same focus on Mary.

As do the Orthodox, Mary is the Theotokos, " the one who bears/gives birth to God".

The respect given to her in Orthodoxy is very beautiful. Also, the women who accompanied Christ are officially regarded as "Equal to the Apostles".

That’s really interesting - I have to confess I know very little about the Orthodox Church, other than the different leaders and calendars.

I thought it was 1)quite nice, and 2)actually somewhat historic. When you think how fraught this schism was, and how many suffered on either side, rapprochement is so much more civilised.

No, the virgin mother isn't such a big deal with Protestants

It has its issues, as all denominations do, not least Patriarch Kyrill of the Russian Church being much in thrall to Putin. It has its saints, the very far less than saintly by any reckoning and everything in between, as all churches, in fact all religions do.

I just don’t think many people are interested in the king meeting the pope.

Yes- many people aren’t interested in history.

Yes that’s what I thought, guessing no Hail Marys were said then!

I think the lack of media coverage is quite sad, it was a very historic moment. I studied Tudor history for A level and found the whole breaking away from the Catholic church fascinating.

janamo · 24/10/2025 19:58

I wonder was any interest encouraged by the churches themselves for instance, was it announced from the altars at all Sunday services prior to the meeting? Maybe it was. While it's historic, it is of relevance mainly to the faithful of each church. Of course historians will have a big interest, but it's not as if the two congregations are merging with a single Head, or a joint Head. They are still very much separate entities.

Is nobody else interested in this from a historical point of view?

Nope. It is several decades too late to be significant or relevant to the general public.

DickDewey · 24/10/2025 20:10

In Tudor times, the monarch and the pope were powerful and prominent. Nowadays they are not. Nowadays this meeting was symbolic at best.

I'm not a Catholic but I very much doubt the Pope or anyone else cares about any revolutions in his grave by Henry VIII, including and especially his unfortunate wives.
