Ambulance - BBC1 last night

I watched an episode of ambulance last night on BBC1. All of the staff are amazing but it just backed up my thoughts that so many other services are lacking.

All the drunk people passed out in the streets of Leeds. Surely we could have some sort of ‘street angels’ helping these type of people?

The girl having an anxiety attack - known anxiety, had it all her life, absolutely no reason for an ambulance to be sent there. Her parents encouraging her to use the service again if needed!

The man in the sheltered accommodation, obviously needed help, but why don’t we have separate mental health emergency teams? Totally separate from medical paramedics.

And as awful as the story of the young child and then further children at the property. What was the need for an ambulance, why couldn’t the police and / or social services take those children to hospital?

I suppose that if the paramedics had left the self harming chap at home, and he had done himself more injury later that night that led to his death then the Paramedic who had got to know him would have felt even worse. At least by taking him to A&E the incident got logged and from the end credits it seemed that the chap did get moved to more suitable accommodation after his discharge, so something good came of that particular hospital trip.

The paramedic would likely also have been lambasted professionally and on social media for doing so, and anything that the man had done to himself would've been laid firmly as their fault.

OP, I understand that many of the mental health crisis teams have been closed down.

Well if I’m totally honest, I mean why can’t that be an actual job role. Not reliant on volunteers or full paramedics / ambulance crews. Dedicated people must be more cost effective then paramedics.

And who would pay? Do you know how many police officers are volunteers -unless you look very closely at their collar number you wouldn’t know. They do exactly the same as regular (paid) police officers. The other night 6 out of the 8 officers on duty were tied up in hospital with mental health patients. But who else is going to go it? These individuals had all be violent. The main problem is the lack of resources given to mental health we need a properly trained mental health team who are a 4th emergency service and can sit in hospitals with violent patients,l

I remember seeing an episode a few years ago where the ambulance crew got the absolute run around from MH services with a patient - the crisis team said it should be the community services. and community services said it should be the crisis team - the crew were tied up for about 4 hours on the phone getting fobbed off. In the end they had to take the patient to A&E which wasn't really the best thing.

I didn't watch the programme so forgive me for knee jerk ignorance/defensiveness but why should the police collect children and take them to hospital?

In answer to your question about emergency mental health teams, I think a big problem in our country currently is we don't pay these people enough for what is very difficult work. They already struggle to recruit people for hospital and ward work, MH teams are low in numbers and they just don't have enough numbers to set up new teams responding to crises.

I work in an environment closely linked to social workers and children in need are not taken to hospital by police, but by social workers.

Bloody amazing people on the ambulances, and all the emergency services.

They are being badly failed by our politicians, as are we all.

There are not enough resources to go round, thanks to those scum running the country (all of ‘em, over decades), and posters here don’t know all the circumstances of callers. The controllers are doing their best in appalling circumstances, and won’t be wasting the resources they do have. They are doing amazing jobs.

I think you shiuld probably watch on catchup before you form an opinion. Those poor children were severely malnourished and some them had wounds on their bodies.
What do you think the emergency services should have done?

I am a street angel. Some weekends are not staffed as not enough volunteers. Please volunteer if you can.
