Are these nits? (Sorry, pic attached)

I am going absolutely crazy. I have used hedrin shampoo three times now. I can't see any lice but my head is still itching every night and when i nitcomb my hair it's full of these white drop thingies. Dh thinks it's the just dandruff but I'm convinced it's nits and ive probably got lice too but just cant catch them. I found 4-5 live lice in ds' hair a couple of weeks ago but after using hedrin twice he seems to be nit and lice free.

I just want to get rid of all of my hair but I can't even get a hair cut in case I have got lice. Uggh.

We cut ds' hair with a long hair trimmer to about 4mm as apparently lice need about 6mm of hair to hang on to. Is that true?

No, his hair still needs treating. I would treat the whole family at the same time and again 2 weeks later to catch any now eggs which weren’t removed the first time.

Strawber · 22/10/2025 06:44

Nits mainly show up as a golden colour so it won’t look like dandruff

lifehappens12 · 22/10/2025 07:01

You poor thing. I have very thick hair and had head lice a couple of years thanks to a child. They way I confirmed mine was two fold - when I combed out I would end up with hair coming out too and could see them suck to the hair. Also any love ones on the comb will move

Nits tend to attach to the hair follicle and are roughly the shape of rice. You could be itching as a result of the shampoo.

WonderingWanda · 22/10/2025 07:11

The actual lice cannot run away from the comb if your hair is wet and covered in conditioner. I have long thick hair but as a teacher have had outbreaks over the years. Slather the conditioner on wet hair. Use a brush to get the knots out and then get a long toothed comb, the Nitty Gritty is the best in my opinion. Comb through from root to tip on the top and underneath. Rinse the combe between each stroke. It really doesn't take that long. If you do this every 3 days you will catch any newly hatched lice before they have a chance to reproduce.

Unfortunately, if you have a school age child they could be reinfested by a school friend repeatedly....this happened to my dd (even wjth her hair tied up). Make sure to let the school know so they can put a notice out to parents to check their own kids.

66babe · 22/10/2025 07:13

I don’t see any head lice at all in that pic

Tumbleweed101 · 22/10/2025 07:17

Eggs have a oval shape to them and look different to dandruff. If what you are getting looks like skin flakes it will be dandruff not nits. They are small but not so small that you can’t tell if it is an egg. The live lice are very obvious, even newly hatched.

We have used rhe hedrin shampoo on hin twice 8 days apart as thr instructions say and ive been nit combing his hair every 2 days since then. He seems lice free but I'm worried he will catch them Again from me or from someone in his school where he got them from in the first place. Yes, of course inimmediately notified the school.

I've got another medicated treatment that apparently kills both eggs and lice. I'll try that tonight. How often can you use the medicated shampoos? Could I just use hedrin every week for a few months?

I remember the nit years. They were grim and the treatment nasty smelly and expensive. We had kids in my DD class that didn't treat them. I spent a fortune on treating the whole family for them to come back a week later. Also did the combing thing. My DD has thick long hair was a real chore. I cut my hair really short just to make it easier to treat.
Moving to secondary school helped. No nits since then.
My head is now really itchy.

WoahWoahandThriceWoah · 22/10/2025 07:28

Chill with the medication unless you physically see a definite infestation!
Condition your hair and nit comb it, it's annoying but it works.
Anecdotally, using straighteners on your hair also helps as most things can't stand being fried at that heat.....use the nit comb as well though as you can't straighten close enough the scalp.

Northumberlandisbest · 22/10/2025 07:40

If your children keep getting reinfested with nits it’s probably because someone at school isn’t being treated properly. My son was repeatedly infested and his thick hair was a nightmare to treat. One day discussed it with his friends mother and was shocked to hear that she didn’t know what to look for. She asked me to check him for her, I had been a school nurse. He had nits, she treated him and we never had problems again. My friend genuinely did not know what to look for.

I followed the NICE guidance on what is most effect and used the hedrin once as it’s the most effect but read up on the life cycle of nits and do a second treatment in the time frame between and stray eggs hatching and being adults.

The hedrin shampoo just isn’t as effective as other methods. You want to nuke those fuckers.

smallchange · 22/10/2025 12:30

The nits I combed out of ds2's hair were much darker. I think any white ones are old hatched ones. Also there were usually live lice (some very tiny) when there was an active infestation.

I would say it's more likely that you've irritated your scalp which is causing the itching, plus psychology because it's horrible when you're going through it. I'm feeling itchy just typing this!

Maybe try to lay off and comb again in a week? There would be lice by then if you still had any viable eggs.

TeaRoseTallulah · 22/10/2025 12:34

RausMitDerLaus · 22/10/2025 00:59

I tried to pop them but they are too small and don't seem to pop. If they were all dead then why is my head still so itchy? Could it just be irritated from combing or hedrin?

Q

Pop them between your 2 thumb nails.

Christwosheds · 22/10/2025 12:34

I think those are empty egg cases. To check for newly hatched lice it helps to have a magnifying glass as they are teeny tiny. Comb through conditioner, wipe on tissue, and look at any minute dark specs though your magnifier. If you can see a shape like an elongated triangle with tiny legs that is a newly hatched louse.

TeaRoseTallulah · 22/10/2025 12:35

Have you used just the shampoo or the actual Hedron treatment?

Chafing · 22/10/2025 12:36

If you use hedrin the nits go all crunchy as they come out and usually look dark.

Just the shampoo. Isn't that the treatment? It's called hedrin kills head lice shampoo

Get a better comb. A nitty gritty comb and conditioner is all you need . In over 22 years being a parent I've never used a treatment.

PeenaM · 22/10/2025 18:11

I would say it’s more a dry scalp type thing?
I get the same & my head can feel really itchy at
times!!

I use coconut oil. Rub into the scalp, leave for a few hours and then wash out. Feels much better after doing that!

SailingYachty · 22/10/2025 19:31

I was itchy for a good week after getting rid of Iice a couple of months ago. I found it helpful to wipe the comb on a piece of toilet paper, I could see the lice then, they were small but dark and you could see the legs and see them move. I found it much harder to tell what was eggs and what was scalp. But the treatment should kill both, if you wait a week any eggs will have hatched and you could do one final treatment.

vickylou78 · 22/10/2025 19:39

No use the hedrin once treatment (not a shampoo)

Tassielassie · 22/10/2025 19:43

Nothing works better than drowning your hair in a cheap bottle of conditioner and a plastic bag.
Leave it in for a good 60-90 minutes, then comb out.
Repeat a couple of times.
Worked a treat when my daughter got them in school.

Tassielassie · 22/10/2025 19:45

Nizoral pink bottle scalp treatment, left in for 30 minutes then washed out is great for itchy fungal scalp.
