Are any other families total night owls?

we are huge night owls, I have 3 young children and only one of them is more of a an early bird but even then not that early! We all rise around mid day and that is when our day begins.
it’s fine in summer but I do find as the dark nights come in it’s not as fun as it’s dark early. I do love the dark but we also need sunlight. As much as we can get in England anyway 😂
there is just so much judgement for night owls!! I get the same amount of stuff done just at a different end of the clock. I’m so much more proructive at night. I usually don’t go to sleep until 3am. I also work for myself so I do have the luxury of not having to be up and out for work and our children are home educated and their tutors don’t come until the evenings. They have so much more drive to learn as the day goes on.
are any other families this way?

Do you not miss out on day trips and seeing friends on outings when a lot of zoos/farms etc close at 4pm? Or long beach days in the summer? How do you all get out and about on bikes or to the park etc in winter if you've only got a couple of hours of daylight when you're awake?

nope we still do lots of day trips, usually get up a bit earlier and be there for about midday. We had lots of sunsets at the beach too in summer. Definitely harder in the winter I find, kids still get out and about on their bikes/scooters even when it’s going dark! They even like going to the park when it’s getting dark 😂 get the place to themselves

I’m a night owl, prefer being active later in the day. Went to the gym today at 10.30pm.
I think biologically it’s about your circadian rhythm and I’m not so sure my way is healthy. There’s research about the light and how it affects you.

I think your kids might struggle adapting to a workday that starts much earlier so you might need to reconsider how your routine might affect them.
Vitamin D levels too.
I wish we could choose 😬

Yes but not 3am. You are not alone.

I'm like this and always have been. Raging insomniac but I just feel better at night somehow. My 3 year old on the other hand loves a 5am wake up so he's definitely an early bird. Fingers crossed it changes 😂

Peanutssuck · 22/10/2025 02:18

Yep! Always have been. I work for myself as well and get so much more paperwork done at night because my phone is much quieter than during the day! That said though, I am still up around 8am/8.30

Left to myself, I’d be sleeping from 3 or 4am every night. I don’t consider it ‘staying up late’, I consider it ‘going to bed’.

I do like it when I’m forced to get up early for whatever reason, but you know how they say everyone has their ideal weight, not what you would prefer, but what your body prefers? My body prefers late to bed and late to get up.

I also love the autumn and winter, and actively look forward to the clocks going back, I don’t know if it’s connected at all?

My household are naturally night owls. It’s a pain as the world assumes everyone is a lark, so it feels like a constant battle to be up early to start work and school. During holidays we revert to getting up at 8-9am.

CryOverSpilledIrnBru · 22/10/2025 03:57

This sounds like an extreme lifestyle choice to me, even more so with children. It's a bit "no rules in this house" but there are rules in the real world, I'd feel like I was doing my kids a disservice. Having said that I'd love to get up at midday every day. Definitely a night owl and it can be a struggle.

Interesting. What time do your school aged children sleep?

Linenpickle · 22/10/2025 05:15

Don’t you or your dh have jobs?

It appears not. The kids are home educated as well.

As you can see from the time I am writing this post I am not a night owl. I need daylight to function.

I think it would only be a problem when the children are older and might want to go to school/college/university/get a job.

I didn't know I was a night owl until I started working night shift. I sleep much, much better and sounder during the day, and feel revitalised at night as a result. When I'm back on days, I'm a shambles. I'm always struggling, half asleep, and slow moving during the day unless I get a really good night's sleep, but that's rare, and nowhere near as good as a daytime sleep.
