I am having a dreadful time recently.

My stomach is always in knots, I constantly have diarrhea or constipation, terrible bloating, needing to pass wind, stomach making noises, its embarrasing.
I think it might be a milk or gluten thing but not sure.

I dont have breakfast and will have a cup of tea about 9.30am at work. Today had the cup of tea and then a small cookie at 10.30 and my stomach started hurting. For lunch has some pasta with homemade veggie sauce and cheese. Stomach got worse all afternoon.

Im currently sitting here, had nothing since and feel so sick, tummy hurting so much.

The other weekend I had some french stick and the same feeling all afternoon, it was dreadful.

Do I speak to the doctor? There is a clinic in my town that offer intolerance testing but its £180 but I am so tempted to pay and see what is going on. My friend used this clinic a while ago and they helped her. Or do I speak to GP?

Could this be something more like crohns or coeliac?

Thank you for taking time to read.

Why not start with a strict elimination diet yourself. You will need a min of 6 weeks for anything you change. If you think it could be gluten cut it out totally and see. If feeling better slowly reintroduce. You will need to read all ingredients for anything ready made. Also avoid “gluten free” oats as there is a small % of extreme coeliacs that can’t tolerate these either.

stick to meat, fish, dairy, veg. Rice is ok. Pulses and beans are ok.
NO Bread, pasta, couscous, wheat, Pizza, Fish & Chips, cake, cookies…

intolerance testing is a scam. There is no such for a list of food, although there is one for lactose intolerance.

Coelics is more than just and intolerance or allergy so I would go to the GP and ask for the blood test which screens for coeliacs.

How long has this been going on for? Have you tried anything already to stop it?

Thank you. I dont really eat much of these things anyway but when I do I am feeling it.
I work in a nursery and there is always left over lunches so I eat that sometimes. Im at a loss with what to take tomorrow because I feel so rubbish tonight.
Eggs? Although I feel like they play me up sometimes

For coelics testing you need to have being testing gluten before the test for the test to work so if you want to be tested for it I wouldn’t stop eating it.

The intolerance test is a blood test.

This has been going on for month and I just push it aside, one day I am ok, the next I am not but its been more bad days recently.

I feel so miserable tonight

Coeliac is not the same as an intolerance or allergy, it’s an auto-immune condition. You need to have a blood test done initially, but you need to have eaten gluten for at least six weeks beforehand, so it makes sense to do the blood test first. It isn’t definitive, you might get a negative but still have coeliac disease. A positive is a positive though. If you get a negative result then try giving up gluten and only gluten, for six weeks, and see how your symptoms are. If nothing changes then you can eliminate cows milk for a couple of weeks, then the next suspect down. It takes time but will give you an idea what is going on. If gluten is the clear culprit you can have further tests done for coeliac , there is a dna test now I think.

A few members of my family used the York Test (a home blood test that you send off to be tested) for intolerances, initially related to migraines. Dairy and yeast seems to be a common thread within the family, with some people also being intolerant to wheat, lentils and other more unexpected foodstuffs. Avoiding the foods has helped to keep my migraines, bloating and stomach issues to a minimum, which has made life much more manageable!

Good luck, OP!

Don’t bother with the testing. Go to your GP and ask for FITs to investigate the cause.

Do you bleed or feel like you need to go immediately but then can’t? Are your stools an unusual colour like green or black?

Tiebiter · 20/10/2025 21:58

Intolerance testing is a scam for sure.

RAST blood tests are not. They test for ige mediated allergies.

Intolerances are an outdated term for non-ige mediated allergies. The only way you can test for these is to eliminate foods for weeks and then reintroduce to see if symptoms go and return.

I would ask for a celiac test before excluding any foods though.

Am I better to get GP appointment rather than paying out?

@Madeamistake21see your GP, they can arrange tests that don’t involve you paying. It takes time but your symptoms will be taken seriously

MumofCrohnie · 20/10/2025 22:37

Not very likely to be Crohn's - that tends to be constant diarrhea, weight loss, anemia, lack of energy. Have you been to the GP?
