Due to fly home tmrw and 6yo says her ear is sore … help!

Hello! I am in need of help please, from those of you more experienced than I. We are in Greece and 6yo announced at bedtime that her right ear hurts and she can feel her pulse in her ear. Temp normal. Pain relief given and she’s asleep.

Child has been swimming a lot in pools and sea. No history of ear issues.

Transfer booked for 1830 tmrw. We are with EasyJet (package) and have travel insurance and the healthcare cards .

Am aware that flying with ear infection is not a good idea esp for a child….

Obvs if it’s sore in morning we will see a doctor. If she says it’s not sore in the morning should I seek a medical exam anyway? Worried she will say it’s okay in morning then say it’s painful later on. Argh! Only my second time abroad with kids and never claimed on insurance so a bit stressed. Thank you!

Not sure how helpful this is, but mine was similarly unwell (e.g., no temp but complaining of ear pain) last year in France and I didn't even think of anything else other than nurofen and getting her home on our scheduled flight as planned.

A pharmacist can check her ear. DD got an ear infection in Greece and he gave her ear drops as she didn't need antibiotics.

Thanks @CharlotteCChapel . She’s currently thrashing her head in bed shouting “owwww owwww” with hand on ear so definitely worsening

Please try to get her checked out- if you fly at 630pm, there is plenty of time to be seen, just to be sure.

Sometimes they will recommend you must not fly home, but its better to be safe than sorry.

I was a holiday rep and dealt with families where sometimes they could/couldn't fly. Do you have travel insurance in place?

herbalteabag · 20/10/2025 22:17

See a doctor right away if you can. This happened to my son a few years ago - not on holiday - went to bed saying his ear hurt and within a couple of hours was screaming in pain. It was an ear infection from a swimming pool, got ear drops that night and it instantly improved.

herbalteabag · 20/10/2025 22:18

I think you could still fly, but if it escalates it will be too painful for her to even do anything.

Atstritchsitchmitchxxxx · 20/10/2025 22:19

Just read you have travel insurance. They probably have a 24 hour line, some will arrange a GP to visit your hotel or one nearby, definitely get on it as soon as you can.

MaddieElla · 20/10/2025 22:20

Yes I'd get her checked especially as it's worsening. Could still be an outer infection and she will be okay to fly. If it's middle ear she won't.

Speaking from horrible experience and although I was sick with worry and stress when we couldn't fly home, it was the right thing to do as she was in agony and I dread to think what a flight would have done. Even a week later she had to wear ear plugs to fly back.

Our travel insurers were amazing though and they took care of all the logistics.

Hope it turns out to be just a grumbly ear.

Thanks all - currently awaiting taxi to take us to paediatrician . Covered by insurance (claim now in place) thank goodness.

A few mins ago she said “my ear is wet inside” 😕

How is she doing?

Geranium879 · 21/10/2025 19:15

Feeling much much better thank you for asking. I’ll be giving another dose of meds soon . We are at gate 🤞

Sorry I skipped an update 🙈 we went to paediatrician early this morning and she was prescribed ear drops and amoxicillin for an ear infection (outer and middle) however doctor insisted she’d be okay to fly. She’s had a few doses of both prescription meds and paracetamol / nurofen now. She is so much better already than she was even 12 hrs ago

We have lots of chewy sweets and things for take off and landing. Fingers crossed it’s all okay… I asked the doctor several times if she was definitely okay to fly…

Ear infections are horrible and painful. I had a perforated eardrum when I was a kid and it hurt!! Just get her home and hopefully the pills will do their magic.
