How much are you paying for learners insurance for your teen

Dd needs to learn and we have a car for her to use (Dh's car) but I'm told I need a separate learner insurance. I wondered who everyone uses and rough costs

Adrian Flux. £200 ish p a

EwwSprouts · 19/10/2025 13:47

You just need to add them to your DH's policy as a learner - not a separate policy. It was less than £150 to add DS to learn on my Seat.

MrsCarson · 19/10/2025 14:33

It doesn't sound as bad as I thought. I figured it was going to be that much each month!

Mine is more expensive, £43 each month. Could have been £38 but I paid more for lower excess.
I couldn't get DS added to my own insurance, which is with Aviva, as I didn't have the 'right' policy for it (apparently not direct, but I didn't pay attention to that when I took it out), but if I had been able to it would have been cheaper.

Not always so simple, Admiral refused to add DD as a learner to DH policy in a 1.2L seat Leon (so not a high performance car or anything)
We used marmalade as a separate learner policy. Initially for 6 months, then could do it rolling month by month as long as she needed.

ThreeCorners · 19/10/2025 14:57

Yes, it definitely varies depending on the type of car. My dd was £30 to add to my insurance with admiral. But £1200 when she passed.

LauraNorda · 19/10/2025 14:59

I just added our kids to the normal insurance. Ranged from an extra 60 to 100 pounds, depending on the insurer.

It's when they pass that the cost skyrockets.

Weird, Admiral added our DCs as learners onto DH policy but it was a slightly smaller car and not his main car.

Admiral added ds to our brand new fairly high speed electric car. They wouldn’t insure him once he passed his test though

Muchtoomuchtodo · 19/10/2025 15:43

We went with Sterling for ds2 who were really helpful. He had his own little car but it wasn’t registered in his name (was a grandparent’s who was not going to be driving for a while) which made it more complicated. They helped us to work out the best and most cost effective solution.

eta it was about £250 for the year. We’re hoping we may get some back if he passes before the year is up

Glittertwins · 19/10/2025 16:12

I’m not having them insured on our cars, they will stay on the small one!

strawlight · 19/10/2025 16:17

Collingwood - Costs from £7 a week for learner insurance.

The real fun starts when they pass their test. We had quotes of £300-400 a month to be added to our car.

Panicmode1 · 19/10/2025 16:19

It's 'cheap' whilst they are learning...it's when they have passed when it gets expensive!

soccermomquestion · 19/10/2025 16:21

It was 60 to add DD to my insurance for my VW polo. Think it’s with admiral.

she hasn’t passed yet but bracing myself!!

Panicmode1 · 19/10/2025 16:22

We have a VW Up - so 1l engine and we are paying £800 ISH quid - that's with a 21 yr old, a 20 yr old and a (17 yr old) learner....

ButterPiesAreGreat · 19/10/2025 16:26

You can also do temp cover for 1hr, 1 day, 1 week etc. I think we used Veygo but there are others, like Marmalade.

MrsCarson · 19/10/2025 19:32

Now I'm dreading the part where she passes.
It's not a main car she'll be on, but a pretty old Skoda that Dh uses as a back up when I'm not around and I have taken the main car with me.

You can try and see a rough price for when she passes, by using a comparison site and tweaking the details for the date of birth. Obviously don’t put in the license number!, but it will still give you a quote so you will have a reasonable idea of what to expect once she has passed.

It definitely ramps up once they have passed. You’re v likely to have a black box too. I was a bit wary of this in the beginning but to be honest, it’s been a bit of a revelation as we can monitor the driving on the app.
