Dog injury - emergency vet?

Just putting this here for traffic

my dog won’t weight bear on his front leg at all. No accident or obvious signs of injury - paw is clear and he doesn’t mind me touching his leg. He doesn’t appear to be in obvious pain but I know dogs can hide it

how urgent is it? I don’t want him to be in pain unnecessarily but also would rather not go to the vet tonight if I can wait until tomorrow? But if I need to take him I will

If nothing in the paw like a thorn or grit in a cut, and if dog seems happy enough I’d give it til the morning and re assess.

Often pet insurances have a 24/7 vet nurse line you can call for advice. In case something you might have access to for reassurance.

Has this just come in suddenly? In all honesty I would be tempted to wait it out till the morning.

He was limping a little earlier according to dd but it’s just now when I tried to get him to the garden and he stumbled on the stairs and then wouldn’t move as he stumbled again and he has just been standing with his leg up

hes a mini schnauzer and I know they can have knee joint issues but thought that was mainly back legs. I just feel bad because he can’t tell me what’s going on!!!

I would leave it. Our dog does this and then is ok the next day or just needs rest.

Bruisername · 18/10/2025 21:51

Thank you! That’s what I needed to hear!!!

despite this being my second dog I’ve been lucky enough not to have too many problems.

I’ll keep an eye and hope he sleeps it off

Contact your online vet (should be part of the insurance or pet plan at the vets) to consult with them.

However if still not OK in the morning being Sunday you'll still need to access the emergency vet unfortunately.

I'm a vet nurse , if he were mine and how you describe i would wait until tomorrow.
Restrict his movements ie take out on the lead for toilet only then back in to rest as much as possible.
I would not give him any pain relief other than any you may have at home that a vet recently previously prescribed for him.
Then i would review in the morning , if improved but not quite right continue with rest and see what Monday brings .
If he is the same in the morning and/or is showing signs of pain then i would seek advice from a vet.

Thank you. He is in bed now and now my other dog is limping on his back leg. Maybe they’re pranking me!

don’t mind going to emergency vet tomorrow if he needs it - but it’s quite late now! I did the foolish thing of googling and it got me into a panic!!

Ddog once had a collision with ds's flicker scooter in a big park. Carried ddog all the way back to the car yelping and crying. Promised the dc a Maccies on the way home so I could drop them off and take ddog to the vet. Typically a Sunday. Stopped at McDonald's and as soon as the door opened ddog jumped out all happy..
Dc were gutted and hoped I was still getting them food! That's typical Lurcher!!

Bruisername · 18/10/2025 22:02

Ha ha! Hopefully my dog has a bit of lurched in him!!

Just to update. He started shaking a lot so I called the vet and they told me to bring him in. No physical injury but tenderness and a bit of swelling on his back leg. Thought he may have eaten something but have taken him overnight to run tests and give him fluids.

i most likely worried too much and it’s an expensive evening!!

Better to be safe than sorry. I think you did the right thing.
