Taking (and giving) language lessons online

Have you ever signed up for language lessons online? I'm probably at upper intermediate level in French but really want to be able to read books in the language. Is it possible to find a tutor who will read a book with me? How much should I expect to pay for that?

Also, has anyone ever tried teaching online? I have done a couple of TEFL qualifications this year (online). Is there any money in it? I have been told that the market has dried up and that it's really hard to earn anything.

You could look at websites like italki or verbalplanet to see how much 121 lessons cost. I guess you'd be able to find someone to read a book with you, especially if the book is free/cheap online. As for teaching online, just look at the prices and assume the platform takes a very big cut! There is huge competition and I think more people are choosing to pay a sub for an AI Chat app instead of a live person.

Perhaps there is a French course at City Lit with a literature focus. I know there are for German. Both online and in person in London.

I massively improved my French by just picking up a French novel and reading it. I also did this when I was helping DS with his French at school. The first few chapters were very slow but it's amazing how quickly you improve and soon you are reading several pages in a sitting when previously you only managed half a page.

If you read on a kindle or and iPad then you can highlight words or phrases you don't understand and auto translate them.

Just get stuck in!

Our daughter does German and a Scandinavian language online. It works very well for her/us.
We went online as we couldn't find any local tutors.
Both teachers have their own online school and I guess a fair wage.
If you work for the big companies like Novakids you won't earn a lot.

If you really only want to learn to read and don't care about speaking, listening or writing then you probably don't need a tutor. I think it would be more difficult to teach you without the other 3 parts of learning a language tbh.
